Eating and drinking with sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hey guys do the same rules of no eating and drinking together apply to sleevers? I notice that I am able to drink larger "sips" than my lab band or RNY counterparts....Sleevers liquids don't seem to pool in the stomach....but rather slide on through... Do you all eat or drink with 30 minute windows between the two?

Thanks

I drink up to the first bite & then wait 30 minutes after my last bite.

I don't drink for at least 30 minutes after I eat. I have heard that it can make the food slide right through and you're hungry again, but in my one experience when I drank Water after eating because my tongue was burning from evil salsa, the water seemed to just sit there. It was a miserable, horrible feeling, and I won't do it again.

Call me naughty, but I drink before and after I eat, even though my surgeon's guidelines say not to. Just small sips, nothing major. After learning in gastroenterology class that only particles smaller than 1 mm in size can pass through the pyloric sphincter, I'm a little skeptical of this whole "fluids will push your piece of steak right through" idea. Yogurt, maybe, but not most foods.

I drink during my meals. I can't stand not drinking a at least a little when I'm eating. I'm afraid I'll choke! I have gotten an "rut row" feeling a time or two when I feel a slight push downward from the liquid hitting my food but I give it a minute and it passes. I've never experienced a time when I've drank while eating and ended up hungry soon after. I do drink a lot less than before my sleeve while eating but waiting 30 minutes, I just can't!

I too drink a couple of tiny sips of Water while I eat, or else I feel like my food is stuck in my esphagus, especially when I eat more solid food like chicken ,and I Never feel hungry after, I actually think I found the trick at last to get my Proteins in, not many carbs or calories, as I get full with a few bites of nice, moist, rotiserie chicken (white meat without the skin)!! I'm happy!!

I have no explanation why, but plain water is tough for some of us those first few months. Anything with Crystal Light, Decaf tea, etc went down fine (after initial surgery healing was over) but plain water? no way! It does get better.

I am almost 6 months out from surgery, and I can't drink any fluids with my meals or I get the slimes, bad:drool5:. Very nasty! I hope that this too will pass, but so far I am unable to have Fluid for 45 min to an hour after eating.

I am 9 weeks out and find that when I drink right after I eat it seems to just sit there and it feels like the food just swells up or something. So now I am learning to just set my drink aside until later. I used to always have a drink while I eat, but it just doesn't seem worth it anymore. I keep trying and I am slowly learning that it isn't working for me to do drink and eat together.

I try to stop drinking 30 minutes before and wait 30-45 minutes after, but if we are out at a restaurant, I will sip until my meal arrives. It keeps me from reaching (out of habit, not hunger) for the chips and salsa, bread basket, or other nibbles that might be on the table. On occasion, I have taken a sip or two during the meal if something is extra spicy or feels a bit hung up...that rarely happens, though, as I hear my dietician in my head, "chew, chew, chew."

I also drink up until I eat, then I wait for about 30-45 minutes after. It's all a guesstimate too. It could very well be 20 minutes or maybe an hour. I admit I don't actually clock watch or anything. I am pretty good at guessing though because I did this with my band for years.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
