Hurry go get Patches, you don't want to smoke and then that delay your surgery. Would that smoke really be worth it. I'm a ex smoker, and I could not imagine having to deal with quit smoking , and the pre-op and post-op diets all at the same time. You can do it, I have faith in you.

So I quit smoking today 10 days till my surg. I need to go get Patches cause I feel like I could RAMBO someone right now.

Thanks for listening.

L:cursing:

lmao! that cracked me up! Rambo someone! I can just picture that :) It'll be ok, it's tough, but you can do it. . . my mom (I know here comes another story but. . .) is 80 and has been smoking since she has been 20. . she was a 2 pack per day smoker for ever and about 3 months ago, just quit. . . she was diagnosed with Peripheral Artery Disease and the pain in her legs was really bad, so bad she couldn't even walk. . so she just quit for her own self. . . she uses a inhaler that mimicks cigarettes, she has had to use it only about 3 times so far. . . I'm very proud of her, it must have been hard, but you can do this, it's for your health so you don't have complications during anesthesia. . after that you probably can smoke again. . . come on you can do it!

Oooh, bad time to try to quit smoking. I quit 2 years ago and NOT SMOKING was my main focus in life for a year, so I couldn't imagine dealing with anything else like surgery at the same time. Good luck to you! I hope you can find the strength to not smoke after surgery too, since it will help you heal better if you don't. I used Chantix, maybe you could have your doctor prescribe it?

I find it quite amazing how guidelines and requirements differ; I was told by my surgeon that of course smoking isn't good for me but that if I was quiting, it had to be atleast 6 weeks before surgery. I should not quit 1-2 weeks before as that could actually be dangerous during anesthesia. If I didn't quit at least 6 weeks beforehand he preferred me continue smoking until post-op! I don't want to be a smoker, so being 7 weeks pre-op I'm quit 2 days ago with the help of tablets. Wish you good luck with both ignoring the "smoking-monster" and your surgery!

Have you looked in to the electronic cigarettes? They really take the edge off, and you can purchase varying levels of nicotine cartridges so you can wean yourself off. Good Luck!!!

My sister and brother in law just quit with those. They loved it! My sister got the nasty ole tasting ones and she quit faster than her husband who got all the tutti frutti stuff haha

I also used Chantix, no bad side affects, and it took the physical need away and I didn't have to RAMBO anyone LOL. I still had to deal with the "I want" but at least "I didn't need".

My surgeon would not touch me until I was 90 days smoke free.

I smoked up until the day before surgery. I should have quit prior. I ended up being in the hospital for 5 days with no nicotine, and that was pretty miserable.

I was told not to stop smoking before surgery. My surgeon said to cut back and suggested smoking one less a day. I've had surgery before and he isn't worried about the effects because I was fine after those two surgeries. He said don't stop too many things at once. I plan to phase them out by smoking one less at a time every day until I stop.

I am quitting (again) on Monday which will be a little over 2 weeks before surgery. I just started smoking again recently after 6 years of being quit. What a stupid mistake!

Ok so no I am at day let's see, I think 5. I have been on the patch and it really does take the edge off. One of our friends asked my husband if there really was a 3 day hump when you quit smoking..and my husband replied " NO but there is a 4 day lump on my head when my wife knocked me one." ha ha ha ha ha ha So not one smoke yet and I didn't Rambo anyone just the hubby...hahahaha

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
