Vitamin making me sick

Recommended Posts

Hello wonderful peoples :)

I have a sub-lingual Biotin and B12 that work great, but my Multivitamin is causing me problems. It is DEVA one daily multi + mineral. I break it up with a pill cutter as they are quite large. My problem is that they make me extremely nauseous for 10-30 minutes when I take it. It is just one step under the point of throwing up. I have tried grinding it up and putting it in my Protein Drink and that makes it worse.

I know I need to be taking them but the sick feeling has kept me from taking them on a regular basis and I dread it when I do take them. I have tried 2 other Vitamins with the same result.

Any suggestions? Is this normal? I have thought about trying the gummi vitamins but that seems so contradictory to taking something healthy.

Hi Jane

I looked at your post just after you first did it, but couldn't relate to it or offer and advice, so didn't bother replying.... however..... I couldn't get hold of my usual vits yesterday and so bought another brand, roughly same formula.

Weirdly, half way thru this one, which I prepped in the same way I felt really nauseous, and started sliming....

I put this down to the fact maybe I just drank it too quick, but the same thing happened this morning as well, so it must be something in it which is making me react to it.

I'm not sure what.... and will be interested to see if anyone else has encountered this issue.

I'm sorry but not being in the US I can't help with offering other brands or things for you to try... but I hope you get it sorted soon.

I've also developed quite an aversion to my chewable multi - I feel nauseous just thinking about it. I'm heading to the pharmacy right now to get gummies, lol. The 5 grams of sugar are worth it if that's what I need to take my multi - I get so sick at the thought of my current one, I've been avoiding taking it.

I started off with the chewables like everyone else after surgery. But, I didn't like taking them and started being inconsistent with the Vitamins. ( I didn't really want to do the gummies.) So, as soon as I was cleared to swallow large pills and felt comfortable doing so, I got some regular Multivitamins. The first time I took one, it made me so nauseous that I freaked out a little. I thought I had done something to my stomach. But, it passed after about 30 mninutes and I knew I was ok. Same thing the second time I swallowed one. After that I went back to those nasty chewables. Two weeks later, I had had enough. I decided to try the regular ones again. Low and behold, I was only nauseous for a couple of minutes. The next day, I didn't feel a twinge. I am now happily swallowing all of my supplements and being very compliant with them since I don't have to chew and taste them. So, give it another go in a couple of weeks and you'll probably notice a major difference in your reaction to swallowing the Vitamin.

BTW, I'm currently taking a multi, B12 (swallow this one too), and Biotin with lunch, sometimes with Breakfast. In the afternoon or evening I take a Caltrate "petitie" and another Biotin. I'm trying to add a fish oil pill into the mix. Took one today, and so far so good. :w00t:

Hey all, Thanks for the responses, at least I know I am not alone and my stomach is not trying to explode from the Vitamins.

I appreciate the information you guys provided.

I went to costco and got a multi Gummy that they carry. I felt like a goob for getting it, but I figure it is better to take in those carbs(sugar) and get the vits than keep avoiding the vits I have and start losing nutrients I am not getting in my food.

The directions indicate that I should not take more than the recommended dosage (2). My god they are good, they taste and look like this candy you can get at the movie theatres, but they do not make me sick. I am going to finish off this bottle and give my "real" ones another go at that point.

I am calling these gummy ones my "dangerous vitamins" because they taste like candy and the whole house wants to eat them now.

Thanks again

~Jane

I told my internist that I couldn't handle the chewables and he said that his wife (who is sleeved) takes Spring Valley Prenatal Vitamins. I get them at Walmart $8 for 240. They are the 1st multi that doesn't make me burp them all day. They are about the size of a capsule but have a coating that makes them go down easy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
