VSG ~ Type II Diabetes

Recommended Posts

I assumed I would be having the RNY because of it's success rate with Diabetes resolution; however, when I had my visit with the surgeon he recommended the VSG. He says my insurance covers it and he feels I'm a good candidate because I've only had diabetes for a short time (pre-diabetes four years & type II for about six months) and because of my lower BMI (37).

As I research, I see that the VSG looks like a viable option but I'm concerned about the resolution of diabetes. The RNY has such a track record. Losing weight is great but I really want to get rid of my disease. Any of you here with the VSG have their diabetes not resolve?

Any input or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Hi LowCho, and welcome! I have Type II also and was told that most Type II diabetes is completely corrected. In fact they are planning on cutting my med. down by 1/2 when I leave the hospital. To be honest just being on the liquid pre-op diet has lowered my blood sugar a bunch.

I did not have diabetes pre surgery, but since it is so prevelent in my family, it was a concern. From mt research, it seems like DS, RYN, and VSG are all likely to reduce or eliminate diabetes. Best of luck with your decision.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
