Hi everyone. I've been coming on the VST now for the last 4 weeks and I can say it's given me hope. I've been overweight most of my life. I'm the only girl out of 5 children and I can honestly say, it wasn't what we eat, it was how much of it. I grew up eating man size portions of everything. I'm now 51 and at my highest weight 240 lbs with a BMI of 41. To say I was shock is an understatement. Boy was I in denial. Somehow or another when I looked in the mirror I didn't like what I saw but it certainly wasn't grossly overweight. I've had a CPAT now for four years but didn't think much of it until the 4th of July when I was staying at a Hostel in the Bay Area and I guess I kept a lot of folks up - I was wakened up in the middle of the night and told to go sleep somewhere else and then called a "fat *%$& pig." Well I know no one deserves to be called names and I certainly was hurt by this staement, but the whole situation got me thinking and made me realize that I needed to do something for myself., I enjoy riding my road bike but I have found myself not riding more and more simply because the bike can't hold my weight. I taken my orientation class and I have my first appoint at Kaiser in Vacaville this coming Tuesday. (I believe this is a new program for Kaiser - since the closest one that I was aware of is in Richmond). I'm excited and have already begun journeling my food intake and excercise. I look forward to reading everyone's success stories and questions. Thanks everyone for being such an inspiration and lighting the fire under my axxxx. :confused1:

Hey Cyclemom, and welcome!

I also come from a family of big eaters. You've made the first positive step by coming to these boards. There are so many wonderful, helpful people here.

I hope your appointment goes well, and any questions... just ask!

Welcome!!

I'm so sorry to hear you were treated that ugly....that was just flat-out rude. :confused1:

I wish you the best of luck with your approval process and getting your surgery scheduled!! I wish I had the knowledge and financial means to do this back when I was at your weight! I was self-pay due to a exclusion of weight loss anything on my healthcare plan.

I'm currently a week and a few days out from surgery and it has been really tough on nothing but liquids. I'm definately NOT loving my sleeve right now! I need to get past the post-op diet and then I can eat/feel normal and then maybe my sleeve and I can chat and become friends. They say the first month is the hardest....and I'm finding out the hard way!

Funny how curtain situations hit us like a brick wall. For me I was in a meeting, and 2 of the younger staff kept looking at me. I got up and got a bagel and sat down they both were laughing and still kept looking over at me. Come to find out they where taking bets to see if the fat lady(me) was going to eat a bagel.

People suck so bad sometimes! I'm sorry for all the humiliating experiences I just read. I definitely have my own, but they don't even bear mentioning because that was yesterday and today, I am on the road to health!

Welcome to the boards and congrats on taking the bull by the horns. People suck and karma is a you know what. The only good thing is it seems you are using the experience to make a positive change and that shows strength and character. Keep us posted on your journey and I am sure you will have lots of questions. You are in the right place to get the good, the bad, the ugly and the absolutely wonderful details about this tool.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
