Presurgery diet question

Recommended Posts

My doc requires it for some, but not others. I had to do one because my BMI is higher and the point of doing it was so that the liver would shrink and make it easier to do surgery.

All doc's are different just like the post op diets are varied too. Depends on what the doctor feels comfortable with. With one doctor I was going to use I did not have to do a pre-op, then switched docs and had to do a week of pre-op. I say yay to the no pre-op diet docs lol. I would suggest that if your a big caffeine drinker that you possibly stop that a week or two before surgery because I know I always got bad headaches when I didn't get my caffeine. So stopping it cold turkey after surgery could make you have unnecessary withdrawls and discomfort.

Just my thought :)

I have been on a pre-op diet for almost two weeks. I can understand the need for one. I think it would be very hard to go through caffeine, calorie, and portion size withdrawal all at the same time while healing. I made sure to stop caffeine the weekend before. I do miss coffee but, I am to the point now where I hardly notice. :) Listen to your doc.

My dr required 1 week of liquids prior to surgery. This is to help shrink your liver. The liver is moved aside during the surgery and shrinking it makes this safer.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
