4 Days Post-Op! Checking in...

Recommended Posts

Had my VSG on Tuesday. Just posting a quick check-in. I have a few observations:

The clear liquid diet wasn't near as hard as I thought it would be for the week leading up to the surgery. I might have even tried for 2 weeks to do the single-incision, but too late for that now!

The day of surgery was harder than I thought it would pain-wise. Some of that was my own fault. I thought that they were giving me painkillers along with the PCA but later found out the PCA was my only painkiller. Once we figured that out, things were better.

I ended up staying 2 nights in the hospital instead of the planned 1 night. I actually recommend it. I felt sooo much better after the 2nd night in the hospital. I'd say that 2nd day I had more pain than I had originally expected.

The rest of the days since then have been great. I would say that after the first two days, the pain has really gone away for the most part and I'm just a little sore.

Like others, I had problems eating/drinking for the first few days. Those have mostly gone away, as long as I keep it slow. I'm still struggling with Gas, using Gas-X and keeping mobile. I'm sure that will subside in a while.

Thanks for all the support. This site is an excellent tool to get/give support. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
