frustrated with inconsistent weight loss... anyone else?

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow sleevers...

Just thought I would put this out there to see if any one has been in the same or similar position...

I am nearly 9 weeks post op and I feel great. The healing process for me was ok and I had no issues at all!!

My weight loss is good and I am not complaining (honest) in fact, I can honestly say that I have never lost 29lb in 9 weeks before, in my life, EVER!!!

However, my weight loss is sooooo inconsistent and I am really frustrated by this, I had a stall from 2 1/2 weeks to around week 5 and then I lost a few pounds and then nothing again...!!!!

Has anyone else experienced this; I was sorta hoping that I would lose a steady amount weekly (that sounds a little self assured and it isn't meant to be) as this is what I was lead to believe by my surgeon!

Any words of wisdom or advise would be greatly received...

xx

I am right there with you. I have lost 21 lbs in 6 weeks and it just seems to take forever. This week the scale goes from 292-293.6 and back for no apparent reason--but it looks like no loss this week and maybe even a completely inexplicable gain of 1.6 lbs.

I've heard people say change your exercise, up your calories, up your Protein to shake the stall but I don't know. I am eating WAY less calories than I am burning by about 2,700 so how is it physically possible to plateau?!!

Hey Donna,

pants innit... horrible feeling but i suppose it is part and parcel of it... i did try shaking things up a little and it didn't really make a huge difference, still i suppose as long as it doesn't go up too much, remember that we retain Water on a daily basis... still frustrating. Patience has never been my strongest characteristic... x

I haven't lost anything in a week - but normally, it would've taken me 2 months (if not more) to drop 18 lbs, so I'm not complaining. Plus my only exercise is swimming 400-500 m about twice a week; before, I would've had to spend like 5-7 hours a week working out.

When I think about it, my weightloss was always in spurts before the surgery, as well. I'd drop a few pounds quite quickly, then nothing would happen for 2-3 weeks, then I'd suddenly drop several pounds in 2-3 days. So it's about the same, except for I'm not nearly as frustrated as I would be before the surgery, when I'd be hungry and exhausted all the time from not eating enough and working out like a maniac.

It will happen, next thing you know, you'll lose like 8 pounds next week.

I am being driven insane by the scale. This morning, magically, 290.6 after a week of fluctuation between 292 and 293.6. Will it stay down tomorrow? Arrgghh! If I could scream without scaring the neighbors, I would.

I never lost every week. I would lose then go on a stall, then lose 5 lbs in a week and go on another stall. Sometimes our bodies just need time to adjust to it's new weight before it will give up anymore.

I am only 1 week out of getting sleeve plication, down 10 lbs this week and 10 lbs the week prior to surgery- waiting for that dreaded 3 week stall... anyway, what I've noticed in all the vertical sleeve forums, is that most people are basically doing a low-carb, high protein- Atkins' like diet. As such, you are probably in ketosis, (if you have a weird taste in your mouth- it's ketones being excreted - ANYWAY... I have lost countless weight doing the Atkins diet (problem was... I like my carbs Way too much - did eat huge quantities and never really felt full- could be because I was a preemie baby- barely 5 lbs and was on solid foods after the 1st week- ..... another topic...

To start your weight loss, believe it or not... you may need more fat calories..... your body will go into starvation mode. Using full fat instead of light may jumpstart your weight loss again...

What I have learned from many countless diets for the last 30 years..... if you eat carbs, you have to eat low calories/ low fat... if on low carb diet, you need your energy from fat calories and should not go low fat...- it will stall you....

I am not a nutritionist...just giving 30 years experience...

Hiya COGSP,

thanks for the insight... interesting about the high v low fat on the low carb front. I will give it a go! Well done on your success so far... how is the plication going, I don't really know the difference to be completely honest!!

Unfortunately, this week, I haven't lost a pound... no weight, no inches and I am gutted!! I haven't changed a thing, low carb, plenty of Water and exercise three times! *sighs* That ended in a bit of a splurgh yesterday, which I think did me good mentally.. if that makes sense! I know this will work for me, logic says that... I suppose I would just like to see a little movement on a regular basis... hey ho!!

Happy sleeving ... x

I've been like oregondiasy, seems I hit a stall every month for 2 weeks. I did the same thing when I would diet before, at least this time I'm not giving up. Can't get depressed and go pig out. ha ha, That's why I had this surgery. Anyway, it has been slow, but I am loosing wt every month. Started working out which help me loose the last 4 lbs, but now I've been the same wt for 2 weeks. I've got my husband dieting now too, so that helps. He can't understand how I could not be loosing more, but I tend to retain Fluid.< /p>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
