Comic Sans MS"]This is probably the craziest question but are you able to keep part of your stomach that is taken out as sort of a souvenier of your surgery!? Im not Crazy but i just wondered if you could do that or not?

I think that would qualify as one of the wierder questions, but you don't know if you don't ask, right. I don't think they would let you keep a piece. But they may let you have a look at it.

LOL, what are you gonna do with it? Keep it in your freezer then throw away when it's covered in freezer burn?

I originally wanted to see it after the surgery, but forgot to ask for it in the whirlwind before the operation (I went first and they literally took me into the OR minutes after Dr. Aceves gave us a talk about our post-op lifestyle). In reality, they'll put it in formaldehyde or whatever other Fluid they use for preservation and send it to pathology, where it will be dissected and inspected microscopically. The best you'll get is probably a bunch of weird brown chunks.

As a matter of curiosity, I can fully understand why anyone would want to see a part of their body. I had my gallbladder taken out over 30 yrs ago, and now wish I had seen (if not kept) those nasty little stones that made me so incredibly sick for 3 years.

However, I would have NEVER thought of seeing my stomach. Don't know why....just never appealed to me. I do have a pacemaker, and when this one wears out, I plan on asking for it.

My husband and I had our surgeries done on the same day. He went before me, and the surgeon came out and showed me a picture of his stomach that they cut out. That was enough for me. I didn't need to see it in real life.

Maybe you can have it stuffed, and create a stomach puppet.

I don't think they let you keep body parts anymore. I think back in the day they would- like throw it in a jar with formaldehyde and say have fun. When I had my wisdom teeth out I wanted to keep them and they said NO. I was sad. They are my teeth and I was paying them to take them- seemed only fair I could get to see them. I guess it's a "bio hazard" or something. Bio hazard...bio schmazard I say. :scared0:

P.S. I don't think your weird at all. When I had a colonoscopy I kept demanding pictures of it as they were putting me under. I think I said something like "If you aren't going to take me to dinner before sticking a camera up my ass at least send me a picture of it!"....2 weeks later I got a big envelope with pictures of my colon in the mail from them! I hope to see my stomach when it comes out...at least a picture of it if they have already disposed of it....I want to say Good Bye to the lil fella.

I can relate to your interest. I want them to tape my surgery so i can watch it when i'm healed. If they video the stomach after it's removed, i'd be content with seeing it that way.

It's customary in certain cultures to keep some body parts, and when i had my kids, my OB asked if I needed to take home the placenta as she would 'mysteriously' make it disappear if that was the case (and no i didn't need it, but did inspect it myself first).

I'm a student nurse who wants to work in the OR, so naturally I am fascinated by this stuff too. lol

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
