Dumping after VSG?

Recommended Posts

I have read a few posts about people dumping after VSG. How is that even possible? I feel like I am missing something really simple here. It's just not clicking in my brain?:confused1:

There is no dumping with the VSG as it's a purely restrictive procedure.

That said, some people use that term when they eat something that their body rejects. Usually the food in question is pure junk - something high in carbs, very sugary or really fatty, and after you've been on a low-carb, mostly Protein diet for a few months your body isn't used to foods like that anymore. I've had the same thing happen after a long restrictive diet, too. It's not because of the surgery.

That doesn't mean you CAN'T eat those foods ever again. It just means your body might not like you the first few times you do it.

Now, people who've had their gallbladders removed CAN experience dumping syndrome, but it's related to having no gallbladder. Once the gallbladder is removed, they're supposed to follow a diet similar to the post VSG diet - small, frequent meals and restricted carbs and sugar.

But no, there is no dumping with this surgery. If you want dumping or malabsorption you should research the RNY and DS.

Transition time (from stomach to intestines) has been studied with VSG, and in one study it says it can cause some dumping type symptoms, and another study says there is no correlation to transit time and dumping with VSG.

I'm in agreement with clk post above. Technically, the term dumping isn't medically possible, but some patients report having symptoms after eating high fat, high dairy fat content foods. I've only seen it posted when people eat ice cream, rich cakes or cake icing, etc.

I feel like crap when I eat fried foods, and super high carbs. I don't get vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea, but I definitely feel very lethargic and kind of run down. I feel it's like my body just isn't used to those foods anymore, and it's telling me that it really hates when I feed it craptastic foods.

Ok Thank you guys for explaining. I understand now. I however am not one of the people who want dumping syndrome, so I will stick with VSG lol! And if I happen to not feel very good after eating something I probably shouldn't have, well I guess that would be a good thing in some cases:)

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
