Oh great ... I have sleep apnea

Recommended Posts

So the sleep study people called me, and told me I have sleep apnea. NOOOOOOOOOO :)

My surgeon recommends I go back to the sleep center and take another study with some face mask on. Are you serious? Look dude, I sleep 9 hours without waking up at all. I'm never tired during the day. Those people at the center probably recorded me coughing before I went to sleep as "trouble breathing".

I snore BECAUSE I'M FAT. All that will go away immediately after I drop 100 lbs...

So I call the surgeon's office who says the CPAP machine is OPTIONAL. I don't have to go back, and it won't affect my insurance. Yay! So why did I bother with that stupid sleep study in the first place?

But my Aetna surgery requirements form says I need a new sleep study if I lose more than 15 lbs, which I probably will lose 40+ lbs before it's all over.

THEY'RE EVIL! I'M NOT GOING BACK! :sad0:

Insurance must be the greatest scam of all time! :001_cool:

Sorry to hear about your "sleep apnea" hope all goes well with the rest of your insurance approval process! I feel so very grateful my National Health Insurance here in Taiwan does not have the 4,000 hoops to jump thru like back home.

I have a co-worker who's sister is going thru the same Kaiser -merry -go -round as me, she told me yesterday I probably will need to have the sleep

test, I thought how stupid. Youre right if they have proven the weight loss will make the sleep apnea ago away.. than hurry up and do the surgery and quit dilly dicking around with the all tests.

They should do the Psychologist first, before jumping thru all the hoops. That will drive anyone

crazy for sure..

The sleep study has to be rigged, I bet all the other fat guys who were with me got the same diagnosis (in order for them to spend the money to come back, and buy that machine, etc).

This was probably what triggered that angry customer from Saturday night. They should just stab a knife into your arm, and record any irregularities while you sleep. "Just ignore the knife, sir!"

Yeah right...

i have sleep apnea b/c i got fat.. was never like this before (husband said i never snored, snorted or gasped for air before).. Funny thing is I was diagnosed 3 weeks ago and THAT'S the reason i have looked into WLS. Because I don't want to be on the CPAP machine forever (my sister has been for the last 5 years). If i don't think my weight already killed the romance in the bedroom, the stupid machine WILL.

I'm secretly glad tho that i have it so hopefully (fingers crossed) I can get approved for the sleeve. God please help me! lol

Ok I have sleep apnea, and am a respiratory therapist. The issues with sleep apnea and any Bariatric Surgery is bigger than it will go away after we lose weight.

Yes most people's sleep apnea is atributed to weight but a great deal of people who are thin have it too.

When you are sedated and have pain medications this also induces sleep which can be hazardous to your post op recovery if your sleep apnea is not treated. It can cause increased abdominal pressure and put you at greater risk for leaks. Sleep apnea often causes your oxygen levels to decrease to dangerous levels, this prevents your tissues from getting the much needed oxygen to heal.

Yes, many people go through surgery without a CPAP and do fine, but many do not.

I know I am not willing to risk it. My machine will go with me to the hospital and I will gladly wear it until the weight comes off. I sleep great with or without the machine, never had a complaint about being tired all day or stopping breathing or anything else. Mine was found accidentaly 3 years ago when we where testing new equipment at work and I was 60 lbs less then than I am now.

Not meaning to scare or preach, just wanted you to know it's more important than people often realize.

Good luck on your journey and much success.

Tracey

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
