Any recommendations for Portland/SW Washington area?

Recommended Posts

I'm researching Legacy and SWW, but can't seem to find any info on Drs who are reputable to sleeve in the area. I'd rather not have to travel to Seattle or CA if I don't have to..

Any advice, opinions or recommendations you've heard?

Thanks so much! :)

i loved my surgeon and staff at Bay Bariatrics in Coos Bay Oregon. Dr Tersigni is well known and they're classified a center of excellence.

Mine was out patient surgery. They have deals with some of the motels there to get a discount stay. I stayed at the Red Lion for $66 a night. Nice place and Coos Bay area is beautiful. Worth the 3 hour drive from home. Good Luck.

Hi April

If you find you need to come north to the Seattle area, I am happy to talk with you about my experience and surgeon who I can highly recommend (in Bellevue). I'm thinking there must be a great program in the Portland metro area. Good luck with your search!

Thanks for the help. I found a great Dr at Legacy (Dr Valerie Halpin) and have already met more than half the requirements for insurance.

Thanks. I'm crossing fingers it'll be Dec 8th. Merry Christmas to me! :(

I see you've been sleeved now. Congrats!

Can you tell me about your experience with Dr. Halpin?

Did you have insurance or self pay? If insurance, do you know what the self pay cost is? I would like to have it done right in Portland, but if the cost between here and Coos Bay is signifigant, it will make a difference in my choice.

Thanks!

Hi,

The experience was good. Dr Halpin hasn't done a whole lot of sleeves, but she's very seasoned in RNY and seemed very confidant in her sleeve ability, so i decided to go with her. I have no problems (other than my own doing.. haha), and she was attentive to all my needs. She is ok - personality wise. Not horrible bedside manner at all, but not necessarily the 'chattiest' person either. Which is ok with me, since i wasn't looking for a 'friend,' know what I mean? She was easy to contact and called me two days after being home to ck up on me. I would recommend her.

I had insurance, so not sure what self-pay is. Sorry. Good luck to you!!:)

Hi-

I am planning on having Dr Halpin do my sleeve surgery in November or December. Want to make sure you still feel she was a good choice for the sleeve. There is another surgeon, Dr Patterson, & wondered if you heard anything about how many sleeve operations she has done.

Hope you are doing well:) Jan

I still feel she was a good choice for me. No issues at all with recovery or effects thereafter. I know someone else who used Dr Patterson and had a good experience as well. I have only heard good things about both of them.

Good luck on your journey! :)

April-Thanks for getting back to me. My insurance requires 6 mos of eating on a diet plan so I'm attending Weight Watcher's. Seems so silly to be dieting since I am a lifetime member & know how to make healthy choices. I think most of us are good dieters but can't maintain & thus are getting the sleeve. Can't wait:) Take care,

Jan

Has anyone used Southwest Washington Medical Center - Dr. Cagle or Dr. Jan? They are a "center of excellence".

I had my surgery 10/12 at Legacy Good Sam with Dr Valerie Halpin & so far so good! No nausea, only 1 night stay in hospital & didn't even need pain meds by 10/14.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
