Introducing myself... :)

Hello,

My name is April and I stumbled upon this site after hearing about someone who had the VSG. I honestly never thought about WLS as an option for me (I have always hovered around a BMI between 30-35) , but the reality hit when i was recently diagnosed with moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Suddenly the list of comorbidities started piling up and I figured enough's enough. I have been heavy my whole life despite being active, who am I kidding? I need something beyond my own willpower to help me lose the weight once and for all.

I am a nursing student...and even moreso I want the weight gone. How embarrassing to preach 'health' when i'm fat.

I've been lurking for awhile, reading everyone's stories... and it inspires me to move forward. I will try the insurance route first, but have my Mx back-ups. I will not let this beat me! :)

I'm excited to chat with you all more! :)

Good luck April, there are lots more people with your sort of BMI going for the VSG and i reckon it's a very good idea.

Hi April, and welcome!

My BMI is at around 38 and my surgeon had no qualms whatsoever about going ahead. From what I've seen this procedure has great results on lower BMI patients.

Best of luck whatever you decide! xx

April, I wish I could of had the surgery when I had a lower BMI, but back in those days they did not perform WLS, none that I knew about anyway. Good luck on your journey, and welcome to a wonderful support system.

Thanks guys for the support! My husband get home tonight from a trip and since he's been gone all this came about. He'll never leave me for a week again...who knows what other things i come up with while he's not around. hehe

it's been a week for me to get used to the thought of WLS... i'll need to figure out a way to broach the subject with him (he's never been fat and thinks i just need to exercise more to keep it off. simple for a man who just skips dinner 3 nights and can lose 10 lbs). ugh..

I'm glad i found this board! :)

Take your husband with you to an information session on WLS. He will have a chance to ask the surgeon questions. :)

my husband was the one who first started researching WLS... I was not sure about it. I went to an information session with him and the rest is history. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
