Ideas for cottage cheese?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I've started the TLBC pre-op cottage cheese/yogurt diet and I need some ideas on things to add to the cottage cheese/yogurt to give me some variety, this is my second day and I'm bored and HUNGRY!!

I've always just added salt... that's good enough for me.

I know some people like their cottage cheese with fruit. What about sprinkling a little splenda or crystal light on it? Sounds gross to me, but maybe it would be ok?

Yuck! lol

Other than that... I just don't know what you could do to it.

Have you ever tried those Davinci syrups? They have them at that coffee shop (not sure what it's called) that is, I believe across from the old Walmart on 8th St... I think it's called Jimmy Java or Java Joe's or something like that. It's in a building with a strip of little shops. They're like $16-20 a bottle, so I don't know if you'd wanna experiement with it. They've got all kinda of fruity flavours, and they're made with Splenda. Maybe a little splash of it on top of your cottage cheese? Once again, I say "yuck", but... :P

Is there very much selection of Fat-free yogurts? Maybe you should hit some grocery stores you don't normally go to and see if they have something different that what you've got.

Buffie,

I had to do that too. Plus, I HATE cottage cheese and don't go near it so I only had yogurt (& lots of it!!). I came across Yoplait's SOURCE yogourt (fat free). And they have SCRUMPTIOUS (& I do mean scrumptious!) flavours now that are to DIE for!! So, I didn't get bored and I kept on loving them. You can get a good deal on them at costco...but they are also in regular grocery stores. They have flavours like "Lemon parfait", "Blueberry crumble", "Raspberry Apple Crumble", Stawberry Chantilly" etc. Soooooo good. AND, I lost 18 lbs during my 2 week preop diet!!!

I'll have to try the Crystal Light thing and the new flavors.

Yoda, can I have anything on/in the cottage cheese like spaghetti sauce or fruit? Or is it just the straight yogurt and cottage cheese with just spices? I can't remember what Nisrine said. They probably only want the basics since adding sauce or fruit would add calories.

That's correct Buffie...you can't add anything!!! Just spices if you want. You can't even add fruit to your yogurt. I didn't even drink fruit juices...just Water and crystal light. Here's what you do (it worked for me so it might work for you). Put your yogurt in a wee bowl (don't eat it out of the container)...sit down like you are having a regular meal with your wee spoon (I used a baby spoon...partly to train for later and to make it last longer) and eat your "meal" of yougurt. Also, don't be afraid to mix two yogurts together...I was doing that & was creating yummy flavours. You can do it. Don't think about how long you have to do it for (will drive you insane). Take it one meal at a time. Hmmmmm "what will I have for lunch today"....hmmmm I think I"ll have yogurt. Yeah, that's it.". (same thing for supper, Breakfast etc). You'll do it ok.

LMAO @ Yoda!!! Hahahaha!!!

You've inspired me!! I think I'll go pick up a bunch of fat free yogurt.:hungry: It will help my with this "Last Supper Syndrome"

Hmmmm....I only have 13 days left to eat normally. What potentially heart stopping garbage should I eat today?...hmmmm....it seems I only have yogurt in the fridge....:) Ah well, yogurt it is!

*exausted sigh after good belly laugh*

I add Mrs. Dash (seasoning) to the cottage cheese, and cut up tomatoes. I prefer the salty to the sweet with cottage cheese.

If you don't have Mrs. Dash, try the tomatoes (or other diced up veggies) with cottage cheese and salt and pepper.

I like my cottage cheese with rasberry Jam or mixed with peach yogurt. It is also good mixed with some spaghetti sauce w/ salt and pepper another favorite is to mix it with some soft scrambled eggs and salt and pepper.

You guys... I don't think she's allowed to add ANYTHING. It's supposed to be a yogurt and cottage cheese diet, that's all. No jam, no dressings, no veggies. The Mrs. Dash is a good idea though.

What if you can't stand the taste of yogurt? There used to be this stuff called "Kissle" that was like chocolate pudding but yet a yogurt and I liked that, but the regular yogurt taste, even if it's got fruit in it, I just can't do. I do, however love cottage cheese and usually add diced peaches. So could I add peach juice for flavor? I'm 28 days til I get banded and see the dietition on the 16th. I'm assuming I'll be starting my pre-op diet on the 21st. Thanks for any advice!

Ok, here's what I've tried in my bored, tired cottage cheese...Splenda brown sugar and cinnamon, Protein shake mix stuff...it's a weird texture, but adds a hint of flavor and more protein...but some calories too...maybe with some Skim Milk in the Magic Bullet???

Well, there's 2 more I think haven't been mentioned.

I know it feels like forever on this side, but sooner than you think, you;ll be back to regualr stuff. It feels like forever, but it won't be...I promise!

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
