I have a question about stalls, I have read that most ppl get them, but I dont see that they increase their walking, exercise. I know is sounds obvious but just wondering if anyone broke their stall with more exercise? Thanks in advance.

Depends on the stall. Stalls are actually normal. It's the body's way to protect itself in a way (amongst other things). People exercise more and/or differently, change their diets, up their carbs and calories, then lower them again. There are things one can try, but stalls are inevitable.

Yeah, to support what Qured said, your body is going thru a huge change. When you're only getting 500-700 cals a day, your body goes into starvation mode and hangs onto every calorie it gets. It takes time for it to adjust...

I don't know the medical speak for this, or even how long it will take, but we are all different.

Thank you for the explainations, I think what Maddie said, describes (medically) really what is going on in our bodies~ that makes perfect sense!

Great post Maddie!

I can honestly say that adding exercise didn't help my stalls a bit. In June I walked over 100 miles in two weeks while in France. I did lose 2 pounds, but that's not much. In July I went from 1 hour to 2-3 hours of exercise 7 days a week. I just broke a 3 week stall when I didn't lose a pound. The good news is that I know I'm building muscle and getting stronger. When the fat comes off, there will be a good muscle base and hopefully my skin will adhere to the muscle.

My 6 month journey has been very frustrating but I know that I'll get to my goal when my body is ready to continue letting go.

I'm soooo frustrated....I've having a stall, week four AND week 5...nothing lost. People say to up the Water, others say to up the cals...I'm so confused. In order to up my cals, i had to up my fats from 5-10g to 10-20g in order to get my 600 cals in per day. And i'm only "just" making the 600cals. I feel like I'm eating all the time...and I'm bloated, and upset. Protien is at 80-90 and carbs at 20-30...7 glasses of water each day... Stop the ride...i wanna get off!!

I know it's frustrating, I have been in a stall myself. But, remember to take your photos and measurements. They keep me from losing my mind and my motivation.

A perfect example is CraftyChristie, if you haven't checked her latest post, I recommend it. This past month she had her lowest weight loss, but lost 3 times as many inches as she had in any other month.

This is such a huge transformation for our bodies and our minds. We had what the scale "says" pounded into our brains our whole lives. But those inches are sooooo important. Re-training our brains to look at the whole picture is tough, but sure can make you feel better.

Hang in there, if you keep doing what you should, IT WILL COME OFF.

This is how it was explained to me and it makes sense.

Pull back from your ?daily? charting, and look at a weekly or even monthly. There are up and down spikes each day, But if you ?graph? the highest to the lowest, I?d bet there is still A downward slope over the course of the month.

There?s an 8 to 10lb. volume of "wiggle room" due to Water alone. And it comes into play a lot. This has to do with our bodies using glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, But it is stored in our muscles for quick energy ? One pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of Water to keep it soluble, And the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs.

So, when you are not getting in enough food, (Like when you drop down to your calorie intake) Your body turns first to stored glycogen, Which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, You also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it Voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of any diet.

As you stay in caloric deficit, however, Your body starts to ?realize? that this is not a short term problem.

You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue And burning fat for energy. But your body also ?realizes?---- (by way of your liver releasing hormones signaling low Cal intake) ---That fat can't be used for short bursts of energy ? Like, to outrun a saber-tooth tiger. :tongue_smilie: So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, And rebuilding the glycogen stores.

And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, (Thus showing negative Calorie load overall) Your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while As you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored. Yes? The whole ?weight-loss? process is not a straight "Slide" down the scale. More like "Stair-Steps," (Down then forward, then down, then forward, etc... As your body cycles fat out of "deep storage" and through the Liver Into the muscles as Glycogen.

The muscles and Liver can hold about a 3 weeks supply. This is why many people find that their "Stall" or "Plateau" Breaks when adding a bit of exercise And upping their water intake, or in the case of an "extreme exerciser," The total Calorie or Protein Intake, To signal the liver to let go of more Glycogen.

That is the best explanation of our weight loss that I have ever seen, not even my surgeon explained it that well and he's one of the best in the world. I seem to be a very slow loser and it is very stair steppy loss. I have noticed that if I up my fat content -not my calories- then I have better loss so I keep my fats between 20-23g's a day. I only lost half a pound in the last 4 days and I exercise 30 min every day and eat 600 cals!

Maddie, you've given me hope when my world has turned grey and bleak. I've been "stuck" for almost 2 weeks now, fiddling with the same 2 or 3 pounds and feeling like "why the hell did I have this surgery if I'm just going to lose 23.5 pounds (post surgery) and STOP forever? (feels like forever).

Even w/ your explanation I am still afraid that this is just it...no other weight will be lost. But I am LESS afraid.

Thanks for these posts! I have been stuck for almost 3 weeks! I lost 20 lbs. almost immediately and have actually gained 2 lbs back!!!! I am eating between 500-700 calories a day and have been active. It is so frustrating...everyone keeps asking me, "so how much have you lost now?" and I keep telling them the same 20 lbs. Grrrrrrr...

Some stalls last longer than others. If you keep following your surgeons plan, the weight will come off. Hang in there.

      Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

        Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
