Lactose intolerant post-surgery?

Recommended Posts

OK, so I've heard some people become temporarily lactose intolerant post-surgery. It appears that I may be in that category. Yesterday I first tried milk (as part of my Protein shakes), and I felt pretty crappy the entire day - extremely gassy on both ends, rumbling stomach, and generally feeling like my stomach was filled with rocks. This morning I drank a 200-ml drinking yogurt (with active cultures, if this makes a difference), and felt fine. Now I'm drinking a Protein Shake with Lactantia (lactose-free milk) and the rumblings and weird feeling of pressure is back, although so far it seems a bit less intense than yesterday. What gives? How long is it gonna stay that way?:thumbup1:

I am almost 16 months post op and I am still lactose intolerant. I can eat cheese and yogurt, but milk makes me rather ill.

Darn! Can you have lactose-free milk or do you have to use soy or rice milk?

Hi, I had a bad problem with it post op as well. I got violent runs everytime I tried things with lactose. I couldn't tolerate Protein Powder that wasn't lactose free. I found the Muscle Milk Light was fine. I think it took a few weeks until I could use other Protein powders. I still use soymilk instead of milk. I also use unsweetened almond milk. I think they're only around 3 carbs per cup which I like better.

Yoghurt is tolerated as the bacteria break the lactose sugar down for you. That is why you had no problems with the yoghurt. The lactose free milk is perplexing as to why it is causing you mild discomfort. My only thought would be that it is only approx 99 to 98% lactose reduced and you are having a mild reaction to the small percent that remains.

I would either try almond milk or if you like the soy ones try them. Your stomach is still healing. Slowly introduce the lactose reduced milk after some healing time.

Hi Blackberryjuice, my experience was like Qureds, I had a short period of milk really not being nice to me so I stopped it, and when I tried again a few weeks later it was fine. Dunno why!

I can drink a little milk. I buy those tiny cartons that they give the kids at school. If there is something I like to eat that I like to drink milk with, I can take a few sips. If I drink a glass of milk, I get bad stomach cramps and diarrhea. I drink Hood carb countdown, and it doesn't do that. My Protein Shakes don't do it either.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
