I think I might be eating too much?!

Recommended Posts

Okay, So I am 15 days port op (about 2 weeks) and today I ate the following:

Breakfast (4 am): little less than 1/2 cup of oatmeal

Brunch 10:30am (since I had Breakfast super early): half a string cheese and one Club Cracker

Lunch:(4pm) little less than 1/2 cup of refried Beans

Dinner: 1/2 cup of honey nut cherrios

Yesterday I ate:

Breakfast: almost 1 whole hard boiled egg

Lunch: 1/2 chocolate pudding sugar free and half a string cheese

Dinner: 1/2 cup of honey nut cherrios

From all the people I have seen go through their eating changes I feel I'm eating too much??? Also, I can fit more food, I just stop because I don't feel when I'm full so I don't want to over do it. Should I eat even less??? I just don't want to stop loosing weight and I want to make sure I'm doing this correctly. Keep in mind I sip Water and some Protein throughout the day.....

Thank you.

It's difficult to say because it seems that every surgeon has different regulations. It's not the volume of the food your eating that caught my eye, it's what you're eating. At 2 weeks out I would have been terrified to eat anything that hard, I was just thrilled to be moving onto blended Soups. Even now at almost 5 weeks out I have yet to eat anything that could be considered crunchy, like a cracker or Cereal. I also have yet to eat a carb like oatmeal since I have to save all my space for Protein. If your surgeon blesses off on it and you feel okay, then I'd say it's a go.

I have also seen so many people still on liquids 2 or even 3 weeks out. My surgeon told me at 1 week out that I could start oatmeal, cottage cheese, yogurt, applesauce, and at 2 weeks out I could start deli ham, refried Beans, club crackers, etc. He also said at about 3 weeks out I can introduce ground beef! I think that's crazy! But I seem to have no problem getting foods in?! Although I DID have one bite of tortilla (which I'm not supposed to) and it felt as if it were stuck for about 20 min. So that taught me a lesson. Anyhow, now I'm wondering why my surgeon let's me eat all these things?! ahhh Well I guess as long as I continue eating small portions, because my surgeon told me it was okay.... after all he is a great surgeon =)

Depends how tight they do it too - my surgeon uses a larger (36) tube but pulls very tight around it, so there's swelling and he knows it will take me several weeks to tolerate solids. I am 23 days out, and I am tolerating small amounts of soft mush, yogurts, Soups. Many things like chicken, fish, egg that I've tried, although soft, got stuck then made me slime until I threw them back up and felt instantly better. I am losing weight so I am not concerned.

If you're staying within your dietary guidelines for calories, carbs and Protein then you aren't eating too much. It sounds like your surgeon progresses his patient's diets a little quicker, and many surgeons do the same thing. Other surgeons are way more conservative, but that doesn't make either "right or wrong".

Measuring food, tracking calories, carbs, Protein through a calorie count will help ensure you're not overeating, and that you are meeting your nutritional goals. I prefer myfitnesspal.com over any of the others out there.

Even though I was cleared to eat anything I wanted at 6 weeks post op, my body wasn't ready for anything dense. I stuck to mushy/puree/soft solid foods for a good 3 months because that's what worked best for my body. It also helped me get my protein in without having to use pre-mixed drinks or powders.

Your plan sounds about like what my doc had me eating at those stages. Again, it is not how much you are eating, but what. It doesn't appear like you are getting in enough Protein.

I, like you, didn't get full (and still don't at 2 months), but stopped at a certain volume. Keep your volume small and stop. I am hoping at some point my "full" signal turns back on. I can eat A LOT at 2 months out. A lot more than what most people post on this board. I had a 32 bougie, so it is not stomach size that is the issue. I guess I just healed really fast.

Make good choices and keep your portions small and the weight will keep falling off.

I agree with all here, just follow your doctors orders and their plan and you'll be ok. . I am now 8 months out and still have to "think" about what i'm doing. . . no, not that i can eat hordes of food, I still keep my calories at about 850 - 900 per day, but i can eat more often during the day. . . and i have found that carbs go down really really good (very bad) . . . so i have to watch that too. . . this surgery has been a blessing for me (as for all of you as well) but as my weight comes closer to goal, i have to really watch. . just like before surgery. . .i have to exercise, eat properly, not snack, and if i do, i have to snack within moderation, drink my Water (yuk, I use crystal lite or sugarfree koolaid and i still get about 68oz down daily). . .it does take work to get to goal, but it's not as hard. . . good luck, your doing fabulous! Keep it up!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
