Diet is a 4 letter word

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. My name is Nicole. I am on month 2 of my medically supervised diet and not doing so well. I seem to want to eat everything in sight. I feel like I'm sabatoging myself. I want this surgery more than anything but I love food. I am always hungry. My insurance only requires 3 months so I want to prove that I can stick to the diet. I have my dietician and psychologist and surgeon appt. next Thursday. My PCP just put me on a 1600-1800 calorie diet along with exercise. Does anyone have any tips? One of my problems is that I am a single mom and work full time with no support. When I get home I am exhausted and go for the convienence foods. Please any advice would be great!! Thanks!

Try planning your meals out the evening before. I try to do this and it really helps. And crock pots are great for slow cooking dinner all day. I have even resorted to packing small Snacks in zip lock bag, like grapes or hard boilled egg whites, that I can bring to work and snack on while driving home. By the time I get home I just make dinner for the kids and am not starving so I eat a little, like a quater of what I would normally eat, of whatever Protein and veggie I make for them. So far I have done better with this than the weight watchers. I did that for 6 months and even though I lost only a few pounds my insurance approved me in less than a week.

Hope this helps and I'm sure more will respond with other ideas.

That's the great thing about this site because what works for someone might not for someone else. I love the different varieties of answers people come up with.

Good luck.

Tracey

I know it is easier said then done but if you come home and go for the convience food then dont buy the convience food keep only healthy food in the house. Also another option is to cook your meals on your day off and freeze them so all you have to do is come home and through into the microwave or oven and then your done. Also I know this had nothing to do with food but try taking a good Vitamin. I used to take centrim for woman and I was still exosted after work I would come home and just crash. Now that I have started taking the Bariatric Advantage multi, Calcium, Iron, and B12 I have so much more energy. You may also want to try to reduce your carbs and up your protien carbs really do give you a boost of enery for a min then bring you crashing down even lower.... Good luck I'm sure you will make it through these last two months and just think of how good you will feel about your self after getting through it all!

Thank you both for the great advice. I do try to plan my meals out. I usually have a granola bar and yogurt for Breakfast, a lean cuisine or smart one and a sugar free pudding for lunch, and two healthy Snacks one at 10 and one at 3. dinner seems to be the problem. I plan a healthy meal but end up overeating so it doesn't even matter how healthy it was b/c I end up having 3-4 servings. My main problems are eating out and Portion Control in the evening.

@laylasmonjo - I bought the womens Once a Day Vitamin but everytime I take it I throw up if I don't eat something IMMEDIATELY after. I mean like take it and then shove something else down there before it comes up. I guess I just have a really sensitive gag reflex. I will try to see if I can find something that goes down better.

My other thing is that it is just me and my son so we have a lot left over and it usually gets wasted if I don't eat it. Thank you for the support.

@tdov1 - I loved my crockpot but mine caught fire and charred the wires. lol! I had it on the stove and turned on the wrong burner. I need to get a new one. I tried WW too and it worked very well for me but I don't have the money right now and keeping track of the points was really time consuming. Thanks for your great advice.

When I take the regular Vitamins they also upset my stomach you should try a chewable the Bariatric Advantage taste good and dont upset my stomach at all, but they are a bit on the pricy side and they are only available on line (or at some surgens offices) but if you go to walgreens there are also some chewable there that are cheaper but make sure you read what is any thing you take. Good luck as for the left overs I know how you fell Its just me in the house so I allways have left overs dont try to eat them at dinner so that you dont waste just pack it up and have it the next day for dinner so you dont have to cook or pack it up and being it for luncg the next day.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
