Vitamins and Supplements

Recommended Posts

I'm just wondering what everyone is taking for Vitamins and supplements or what your doctors are recommending. My surgeon from Mexico recommended Bariatric Advantage Vitamins and Protein supplements daily, Calcium 1000-1200mg, B-12 sublingual daily or 1000mcg injection monthly, and Iron. Then my aftercare doc recommends Vita4Life bariatric Vitamin supplement in the pink wrapper, calcium citrate 3500-4500mg, 90-120 protein supplementation. He seemed okay with the orange flavored liquid GNC brand Multi-Vitamin I've been taking but I recently changed to orange flavored chewable Centrum. I'm not sure how they all compare. I'm 2 months post-op and only doing the multi-vitamin. I've got Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Hypothyroidism, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, sleep Apnea, etc. so I think I should probably be taking the vitamins, minerals and other supplements more seriously and would love imput. I've had my first fill and have pretty good restriction so find myself slipping in and out of soft food syndrome and not putting protein first when it comes to my eating. I'm reading Atkins right now and plan to do my doctors plan that he calls Foxkins and it will up my protein intake greatly and weight loss (he says average of 15lbs a month!) It's like Atkins minus salads.

Thanks, April

I just take a multi and a mix of flaxseed oil/fish oil because most people in the western word are Omega 3 deficint/imbalanced - and since I noticed what a remarkable difference they made for my son's eczema, vanity keeps me taking them. I think they do more than the most expensive face creams ever could.

I probably should take Calcium and Iron as well. But its too many pills, lol. But that would pretty much cover all bases for me as I have no health issues.

I take Flintstone's Complete and 1000-1500mg Calcium w/ Vitamin D. It seems fine, the only thing I wonder about is something for the hair-loss?? Is their a supplement that's good to thwart hair-loss? Liz

I checked out the Vita4Life supplements and they are all in capsules not chewables or liquid so I don't plan to order any of those, I also checked out Bariatric Advantage supplements and they have lots of flavored chewables, plus the small size Biotin to swallow, and sublingual B12 so thinking I'll order what I need from there. Does anyone have another line of supplements they recommend checking out or an online Vitamin store they get everything from for reasonable prices. FYI I haven't seen anything about Omega 3 in chewable or extra small capsules.

Thanks, April

Hi April, I usually buy Nature Made C and E from Wallgreens. This month they are buy one get one free. :) I tried Nature's Bounty C and *makes a face* they were awful! Nature Made is really tasty. Tart orange.

I buy Caltrate chewable calcuim and at first they tasted very gross to me. Very chalky. I drank Water with them. But now I really enjoy them. They don't taste chalky at all. Very fruity.

The Centrum is pretty good. I liked the Centrum Silver better but I've been buying the regular Centrum lately. Regular Centrum tastes kind of like a chocolate/orange kind of thing, and Centrum Silver tastes fruity.

I usually remember to take my Vitamins everyday now because I look forward to them, like a treat.

And no, I don't consider the calories. :)

It took some time to perfect my Breakfast shake.< /p>

I use whey protien, sillium Fiber, flax seed oil, One Source Ultra Liquid Vitamin, Green tea powder, black berries, Bannana. 1 Cup of milk. On most days this is breakfast. All Organic products and One Source is the absolute best vitamin I have found for me. fruit is changed around but I usually get the Bannana in there everyday. I try to snack on walnuts if I can but sometimes they dont go so smooth. I used to juice alot and I am sorry I sold my Juicer.

Bobby,

What flavor is the One Source Ultra Liquid Vitamin? I don't usually do shakes but I need to up my Protein so I may start doing high protein ones, my only problem is my doctor wants to follow a diet similar to Atkins that doesn't allow fruits and veggies. I'm just not sure how to make something decent tasting without some fruit. Do you prefer whey protein over soy for any certain reason? The sillium fiber, is it good for regularity? Why do take flax seed oil? Thanks for your help, April

Still wondering what the flax seed oil is good for? I have another question about Protein powders, has anyone used nectar Protein supplement, it's suppose to be a high quality whey protein and comes in 7 delicious sounding flavors like lemonade, apple ectasy, fuzzy navel, caribbean cooler, strawberry Kiwi, Lemon tea and I can't remember the last one. I figured with these I could use ice, diet sprite and the powder in a blender and it would taste pretty good without any fresh fruits (I heard the Protein Powder mix, with diet sprite and ice idea from someone on the bandsters forum-carbonation isn't an issue by time it's all blended) I could even add more flavor by using diet orange soda at times, or maybe using sugar-free italian soda flavoring. Love getting back any input. Thanks! April

rich in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids plus show a significant help in the fight of prostate cancer. I feel that the fiber is essential for us especially the banders because we lose a lot once banded. The sillium and flax seed oil coupled with (matcha) fine green tea powder, blueberries, Vitamins, powder I feel is the 1,2, punch.'

The plavor of the one source I believe is pineapple but it taste like nothing I have tried. Very good in my breakfast shakes.

Since banded I dedicated myself to exercise. I have done 2 5K's simce and regularly run 4-5 miles now. I lift weights 3 times a week too. I am still bulky but very healthy. Resting HR is 59 BPM it was 82 when I was banded. I've saved a lot of beats. One thing I want to add. When you have a drink such as this with the sillium fiber a hour later when you drink Water you will still feel full and I normally dont eat until5-6 hours after I have this,

Another recent trick. At 3-5AM for me Maybe PM for most a handful of carefully chewed walnuts. These will keep you full I promise til bedtime. And they are great for your heart and circulation.

Yes the fiber andflax keep me perfectly regular and its all that does for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
