Hi All, My nut suggested that I taste test some Protein shakes before my surgery next week so I had some Isopure chocolate can't taste the chocolate but it wasn't bad. The thing I did not ask is if I should stick with straight Water or skin milk. What do you all think?

Ugh I think I might have been a bit premature I am feeling a bit nauseated right now not sure if it is my nerves or the shake. Anyone else have this?

To answer your original question, most surgeons will tell you to start with Clear Liquids (i.e. no milk), then proceed to full liquids (which includes milk and basically anything you could sip through a straw), and then to soft foods (e.g. cottage cheese, cooked veggies, fish). So until you can talk to your nutritionist or surgeon, I'd plan to take the shake with Water for the first few days.

Ugh I think I might have been a bit premature I am feeling a bit nauseated right now not sure if it is my nerves or the shake. Anyone else have this?

Day 2 of my "clear liquid diet" I got some Protein shake mixes, had one (Cookies & cream, mixed with skim milk, in the blender, and then in the freezer for a bit). After about an hour I had stomach aches like you would not believe, and almost puked it out.

I've done a little reading and the recommendations were: 1.) use Water instead of milk, and 2.) try 1/2 to 1/3 of a serving, and then work your way up. I did both today (1/2 serving with Water, and only a little milk) and didn't have any aches today.

Hope you find something that works for you!

Thanks. I am still on clears now and just getting in enough liquids and Protein is a trail.

The rule from my doc was this...use fat free or lactaid milk pre-op and while on liquids after surgery. Once mushies are intrduced, no more calories from liquids in the shakes, i.e. milk or juice.< /span>

I was told in my presurgery seminar to not drink milk at all...(I used to love oatmeal in the morning). Milk sugars just like all sugars turn to fat if not used up. Sugar grams over 3 are a no no for my program. I do use a 1/2 cup of lite soy milk however...that is 3 on the dot.

I've been doing skim only. HEB if in your area has Mootopia which is very very low in sugars, but i don't think it has a very long shelf life. There is silk (soy) and almond i believe you can look at.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
