Incisions are getting itchy and glue is coming off

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the same for everyone but I had glue put on my incisions, instead of stitches, now I have 11 days post op and I feel itchy a lot and the glue is beginning to come off. My surgeon told me that the glue will start coming off by themselves and that I could wash lightly but for some reason I'm scared of the glue coming off. I'm afraid that the incision will open! If I wanted to I can literally just lift all the glue and take it off which I am avoiding. How was your guys' experience with this? Also after the glue does come off did any of you use any type of creams so the scars fade better?!

Thank you!

I didn't have stitches either they just glued them shut and put steri-strips on them. At my first post op appointment my doc took off the steri-strips and I was really freaking out because I thought that I would start gushing blood... Don't worry I didn't! If some of the glue comes off I think you will be fine I didn't have any issues and I was only 6 days off when he took off the strips.

I had that too.. I was so scared but it was fine.. The being itchy is a VERY good thing since it means you are healing. What happened to me is I put Water pruff bandaids on to swim and one of them took the glue off when I took it off since it was a little too small. It was healed fine but I still waited a day to mess with the others. It was fine but I like you was scared since I want my scars to be as small as possible.

I too had the glue but nothing else and they almost all fell off by the 3rd-4th week. I was itching like crazy just days after surgery and was told not to fuss with the glue 'stitches' at all. I used Benadryl spray and it was a lifesaver. I just sprayed it right on and it worked and didn't affect my glue at all. I also sometimes at night would crush a Benadryl pill and eat it with applesauce to keep from waking up in the middle of the night itching. I found myself waking up and unconsciously scratching away at my incisions and was loosening the glue. The pills worked great as well but made me sleepy. Good luck and call your doctors office if you are concerned.

As far as them coming off, mine seemed to come off at night when I slept. I woke up a few times to see them in my bed sheets. Kind of a gross find but it was painless. One came off when I was putting on a shirt. Again, I was told by Kaiser not to touch them or try to take them off myself whatsoever and not to use any sort of creams on my incisions until I was at least 4 weeks post-op.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
