VSG and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) experiences?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I posted this on Ask Dr Jossart but I would appreciate your input here too, if anyone has any experience of IBS and VSG I know my friend would be very grateful. She is a little shy so I said i would ask for her. I know you will alll be full of good advice and ideas.

I have been asked by a friend whether or not suffering from IBS would preclude her from VSG surgery? If not, what should she do, over and above what the rest of us had to do, post surgery to recover successfully? I have not got this problem so I cannot help her. Please could you give some advice here?

HI

I don't have IBS but I do have colitis (which is offers some of the awesome symptoms of IBS). When I had my consult with my surgeon I mentioned the colitis to him to see if it would be an issue with surgery either before, during, after. He basically told me it had no bearing the surgery only affected my stomach not the lower bits. I would think that the VSG would actually help with IBS....I am hoping it helps clear up my colitis issues. Being forced to eat healthy things should help the intestines out a bit. My gastrotoligist (spelling?!) had me cut down on fatty foods while they were trying to diagnose what exactly was wrong with me and said that those heavy fats are really hard on the intestines and cause a lot of the "upset stomach" issues.

Don't know if that's any useful info but it's my 2 cents.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
