What happens at the Psych Evaluation?

Recommended Posts

I am about to schedule my psychiatric evaluation and am wondering what to expect.

Currently I am going thru the 6 month weight loss plan with my primary care and am entering the 4 month (woohoo). Now it is onto meeting with a psychologist for this required eval, then will meet with a nutritionist in a month or two.

Anyone who has had this done already I would love to hear what I am walking into with the mental health part.

When I had my evaluation, the psychologist talked to me for a while about who I was, about my family, my job, my general health and then my lifelong weight problems. After she got a feel about who I was and where I was coming from, she gave me a standarized test that basically was to see if you are nuts. I had a similar test when I started working for the government. About a week later I got a copy of her impressions that she sent to the Bariatric Center. I tell my family now that I'm not crazy and I have papers to prove it! LOL!! All in all it was painless. I just acted my normal self and it was fine...Carole

I met for 5 min with the psychologist and then answered at 560 question personality test. That's it. Suppose to take 2-3 hrs, I was out in 55 min

Plan for 2-3 hours. For me it was an interview about my weight loss struggles and then a personality test that was long.

I guess I have the papers to prove that I am "crazy". She didn't like how I answered some of the questions and they required me to see a therapist. The therapist got to decide when she thought I was ready for surgery. I have to say I was upset in the beginning because this was just something else holding me back but it has been worth it (seeing the therapist)

Mine was similar to an interview that lasted 1 1/2 hours. She wanted to understand why I thought I had a weight problem, what got me there, my outlook on surgery, etc... She told me afterwards that the goal was to be sure that I understood the surgery is only a tool and also to confirm I have a solid support group. You will do fine! I'm in Houston. Who is your surgeon?:frown1:

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
