Question about carbonated drinks

Recommended Posts

My NUT says you can have it flat (but then why bother...lol) but I gave it up for 10 months last year (I was on a crazy chiropractor-endorsed diet that was extremely strict...the diet didn't last 10 months but my not drinking soda did). After 10 months and I didn't lose any weight, didn't feel any different, I kind of went, 'meh, why exactly am I NOT drinking my beloved diet soda???" So I started up again...always been a 1 can a day gal.

So when I started the WLS process this Apr. knowing that I would need to go off it, I thought about all kinds of way to do it, like, set a "date" or go have one big last giant diet coke at a local restaurant, etc. And you know what? I don't actually remember what date was my final soda. It has been about 3 weeks ago and it just sort of happened. I definitely wanted to be "off" it a couple of weeks before surgery. I will admit about 2 months ago I quit buying it (so I wouldn't see it in the fridge.) But I would still order it at a restaurant, or do with a quick-serve type lunch. So I guess it was sort of a gradual approach.

I think this is one of those things that every surgeon has slightly different rules, everyone who drinks it has to give it up in their own way, and then there are different degrees of "addiction" to the stuff. As much as I like diet soda, I find that life without it seems just fine too, so it is not necessary for me to live a full, happy life.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
