christina@MIA 12 Posted August 9, 2010 Hi all, I am just trying to figure out what is a good bougie size for a BMI of 36.9. I want to lose around 70lbs. My Dr. uses a 32 but Im thinking a 36 might be fine for me.
Ihave6kids 29 Posted August 9, 2010 Maybe I'm dumb but what is a bougie?
Lori21769 14 Posted August 9, 2010 My starting BMI was 43 and bougie size was 38. That is the only size my surgeon uses. He thinks any smaller is too much restriction. He showed me the difference between a 32 and 38, and it is barely noticeable.
Garyb_58 1 Posted August 9, 2010 I started at a BMI of around 50 and currently at 31 and I have a 36. Good luck. Gary

disp4so 3 Posted August 9, 2010 I started with a BMI of 45, surgery day 40. my surgeon used a 34, but he said that is what he uses for everyone, he felt 32 is too small

Jane_J 117 Posted August 9, 2010 (edited) Hi all, I am just trying to figure out what is a good bougie size for a BMI of 36.9. I want to lose around 70lbs. My Dr. uses a 32 but Im thinking a 36 might be fine for me. Hi, I was 40.5 and am now 22.something. My approx bougie size was 40. The bougie is the guide they use to staple round to shape your new stomach. The higher the number the greater the diameter of your tubular stomach in cross section. I was told my stomach should have a capacity between 125 and 150ccs, if that is any help to you all. Jane x Edited August 9, 2010 by Jane_J
Dansha 16 Posted August 9, 2010 I haven't had surgery yet,but my surgeon told me he will use a 34 bougie on me. My BMI is currently 47. Deb
cwalker 12 Posted August 9, 2010 My BMI was 39.2 on surgery day and my surgeon used a 36 bougie, he uses the same size for everyone.
pcindy 8 Posted August 10, 2010 My surgeon refuses to use anything but a 32. I pleaded with them to go with a larger size but they are adamant about it and say that it is now the "gold-standard." Oh well. I'm having it done at the best practice in my area, in the hospital system I work for, and that is fully covered by my insurance. The other reputable practice in my city also uses a 32. C'est la vie. It's next week, so I guess I'm going for it!
Donna4545 13 Posted August 10, 2010 I think your doc is the best source of info on what size you should have. I really don't think telling him how to do his job is going to win you any brownie points. He has his reasons for size--he didn't flip a coin.
