So after watching MANY videos and talking to a good amount of people, I am now nervous.

Is it weird or unusual that when I had the VSG done June 11th, that I never had that "drain" tube thing?

I didn't and neither did my other friend who had the surgery with me the same day.

What exactly does the drain do?

It's just weird to me that i'm hearing mostly everyone had the drain tube (sorry idk what exactly its called), and I didn't have that.

They told me the drain tube was put in as a way of knowing if you

have a leak. They would check the bag on the tube to see what was

draining into it. They also did other leak test prior to me leaving the

hospital.

The only leak test they had done on me was where i stand up and this machine ultrasound/ xray thingy and they had me sip on this drink stuff and they watch it go down and make sure it doesnt leak out of the sleeve (which it didnt).

That was one of the test they did on me too on the second day after

surgery. But they kept a close eye on the drain tube and bag to make

sure I didn't have a leak prior to doing drinking test.

I didn't have one either.

finally found someone else who didnt have one lol.

That was one of the test they did on me two on the second day after

surgery. But they kept a close eye on the drain tube and bag to make

sure I didn't have a leak prior to doing drinking test.

i guess the drain is just an extra safety step then. I just didn't know if it made a difference or not:)

I didn't have one either. In fact, I didn't have any leak tests other than the one they did during the surgery itself. And I flew through the whole surgery and recovery with flying colors.

Go figure.

This does not have anything to do with doing the surgery right, I did not and have not had any problems with the surgery. I knew prior to surgery that the drain would be put in because that is what my Surgeon does. I am happy for those of you that did not have to have one, but it was really no big deal having one. They put it in as another way of checking for leaks which if I would of had a leak I would have wanted them to catch it early.

My surgery was done correctly with no problems and I have lost 128 pounds since Jan 25, 2010. Pictures are posted if you want to see them.

It just a surgeons choice.

I had a drain so that they could do the leak test, and I'm glad they did. I would rather have that extra "safety step", and having it in is really no big deal. They took it out before I left the hospital. I also had the radiology leak test where you swallow stuff before they discharged me. I appreciated the thoroughness of the surgeon in using the drain.

I only had drains because of my leak. My surgeon doesn't place them for standard VSG unless there is a specific reason. He does 3 leak test, one on the big portion in the OR, one the following day with contrast Fluid that you drink and a ct scan.

You're all lucky. My surgeon made me wear my drain for six days AFTER leaving the hospital. It was quite a pain to drag around. It also felt like my internal organs were being pulled out through the small hole it was in when they took it out haha.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
