From quest to journey

Recommended Posts

As I await insurance approval (fingers crossed), I've been thinking about this journey. I'm not sure you'll agree with me but it really begins as a Quest. A quest for health is the first priority, but then it morphs into something quite different. A quest for the right surgeon, a quest for the right psych evaluation, cardiac, endocrine, sleep study, nutritionist, gastroenterologist and others I've probably left out. After all this is accomplished, the dreaded wait for insurance approval or waiting until you can afford to pay for surgery out-of-pocket.

If anyone ever says to me "your not serious about loosing weight" again, I'm going to explain in detail the process for WLS. So if you agree with me or not the Journey begins as a Quest.

I felt like it was a process of requirements I had to fill--like a giant Kafka-esque health bureaucracy. Now that I'm 3 weeks out I'm less hyper about it, and am trying to settle into new habits for a lifetime. Making the transition from hyper crisis to crisis approval mentality to acceptance of a new lifestyle is taking some adjustment.

That's how I was. It seemed to surprise people. But I had no doubt. These were the steps that had to be taken, and I was going to take them. No matter what. And post-op, you won't catch me with the Cool Whip, it's straight arrow all the way. Good luck with everything!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
