Booked for 8/28 with Dr Aceves

Recommended Posts

:) Anyone else going to be there during that time?

I'm nervous, excited, anxious, but know deep down this is right for me.

I told my PCP today, and she wasn't too happy, and she kinda tried to make me feel unprepared. But she admittedly stated she knew nothing about VSG, and she was concerned that if there really is a problem from the surgery, there would be no doctor (surgeon) to actually fix a complication. She did say should would run labs and order any other tests that might be necessary, but anything surgical she was unsure that I would find support. (I'm trying not to buy into that)

My main focus has to be on pre & post op changes, mainly eating/drinking properly. I'm so afraid I will do something wrong.

One thing I thought was odd, was the Dr.Aceves requested I stop taking wellbutrin prior to surgery and my PCP says I shouldn't. And I do want to stay on it to help with the emotional changes happening now and going forward. I read that other thread about it and I think it will be okay to stay on it, maybe just skip the day of surgery. She even gave me a different script for quick release, instead of extended release.

Do you know why he wants you to stop taking your Wellbutrin? Because maybe there's some interaction with the anesthetics during the surgery or something.

This is what Nina wrote to me about that:

"This medication in particular has strange side effects at the time of surgery. Even back when we only did bands the swelling it caused made it difficult for patients to even drink Water. "

I find it odd that I haven't seen this discussed on this forum or anywhere else (especially that thread that was specific to wellbutrin). She did say if I couldn't get completely off it, that any reduction would be helpful.

Hi Sleevesearch!

I am scheduled with Dr. Aceves for 08-27, so you and I will be there together!

I'm glad I have found someone who will be there at the same time as me!

I would email Dr. Aceves' office back and find out when it is acceptable for you to discontinue the meds. My husband was on it and I know his doc didn't want him coming off cold-turkey due to the risk of seizures, etc. Find out if it is okay to just stop the day of/before surgery. That is a tricky thing...trying to balance what the PCP wants and side-effects of coming off abruptly and what the surgeon wants.

Yay Krista! I'm so glad. After I wrote that post, Nina wrote me back and said:

"This medication in particular has strange side effects at the time of surgery. Even back when we only did bands the swelling it caused made it difficult for patients to even drink water"

So I don't know....I will try to reduce some and also skip the day of surgery, but I don't want to quit it. Nina did say reducing some would help, she understood that I wouldn't come all the way off.

My brother is coming with me, are you bringing anyone?

My hubby will be there with me.

He isn't a "sit-still" type of guy and I'm worried that he is going to be bored out of his mind!

I am going to be there 8/20 so I will miss all of you guys, so far it sounds like a slow time for me, unless all the people going don't peruse these forums :svengo:

I was also asked to be off wellbutrin for at least 4 days prior to surgery. I have been slowly weaning myself off of it to avoid any problems with a sudden stop. I plan on asking when I can start back on it, since I do much better with it then without it.

I am hoping at some point to stop it entirely...ie hoping my depression is more related to my body and weight rather then a genetic situation that will never go away.

Best wishes to all of you that will be there a week after me.

Wait. Now I am confused. I thought it was 4 days total....like:

arrive for preop testing 8.29

surgery 8.30

day 3 8.31

day 4 9/1 (go home)

But you say you arrive on 8.27 and don't leave until 8.31? that's 5 days....? 27,28, 29, 30, 31

I arrive the AM of the 27th and picked up at airport by their dirver then taken to the hospital for pre-op work. He will then carry me to the hotel. I will stay the night there and then he will pick me up in the AM of the 28th and carry me to the hospital for surgery. Then 3 nights in hospital after surgery. He will pick me up at hospital at about 7am on the morning of the 31st and carry me back to the airport. 1 day and night at hotel which will be Friday, then Sat, Sun & Monday in hospital and out Tues. So, its really not 5 days. I hope this explains it alot better. Sorry if I confused you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
