4 months out - diarrhea

Recommended Posts

Anyone have this ? I'm 4 months out and have had 3 episodes of "immediate" diarrhea - twice in public!!! The worst was yesterday - ate at a restaurant and within minutes of paying the bill I had to get to the bathroom and didn't make it - was coming up the escalator trying to find a bathroom - had to ask someone to get me a towel so I culd get out of the store. I've also posted this question on "complications" forum - anyone with any ideas? I'm not eating too much nor too fast.

Good morning Trish!! Sorry you are having this problem. The only time I seem to have this is when I go out to eat and have something really greasy or something really sweet. I so rarely have this type of food that when I do, watch out!! I will take some time before you know what you can and can not eat "out in public". When this happens to me, I know it is a sign that I ate something that I probably shouldn't have but did so anyway during one of my "I've been good so I'm gonna cheat a little" days.:(

Can you tell us what you ate each time? Was it something you were previously able to tolerate? I think most sleevers find bowel movements come every few days or so once we start mushies/soft food, so the diarrhea is most likely specific to what you ate each time. Dairy seems to be a fairly common trigger post WLS, but not for everyone. If you are not able to identify anything food related, I would definitely say follow up with your surgeon or a GI doc. You may have something intestinal going on.

Could it have been an acute episode of lactose intolerance? I know some people with lactose intolerance can handle some milk products (e.g. cheese) but others cause a really intense rejection (e.g. ice cream).

Carry a spare pair of pants and underwear for a few days, just in case...

Thanks for your replies. I think I'm thinking that I eat "such small bites" that no way could it bother me - but probably not so with the sleeve. Anyway: this last episode (last of the 3) here's what I had: I had a few bites of a hamburger that had blue cheese and bacon on it - and a couple bites of a rich desert that had thick chocolate concoction - BUT I'm serious - these were like "nibbles". I also had a few sips of gingerale. Thanks ladies for your help. So nice to be able to go to this forum for help.

Hmmm...I'm thinking it was either the blue cheese or the chocolate, but most likely the chocolate. Chasing it with the gingerale might have made it worse. (Good lord I want some gingerale!) :confused1:

I guess we're all having to adjust to what our stomach will tolerate post op. If all of these episodes were soon after eating, maybe you can start a food journal and try to track down the patterns. But, hopefully it won't happen to you again. I know that's gotta be a BAD feeling. :)

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
