Self Pay Mexico patients with complications

Recommended Posts

I was reading the thread on complications and many listed dehydration that required hospitalization or ER visits. Is there anyone out there who went to Mexico as a self pay patient that has had to visit the ER or be hospitalized once home? If so, I am curious what a trip to the ER for dehydration costs or a hospitalization for that matter? I would just like to know what I may be looking at financially if that were needed. If there are others who've had other complications that would like to share their complications and out of pocket expenses, I would really appreciate that information as well.

Thanks to everyone in advance for responding!

Even though WLS may not be covered by insurance, many items related to the surgery are covered. If the ER simply coded the visit as dehydration, insurance would cover it.

I was self-pay, but fortunately didn't have any complications that required f/u care. Insurance did pick up my pre-op testing and pysch visit. They also covered my 3 month post-op labs.

while every insurance policy is differnt, weight loss surgery and true complications are mutually exclusive. if you have wls and you are indeed dehydrated and go to the ER or are admitted that is a true "emergency" and the diagnosis of dehydration is made and you are give IV fluids and that really should have no bearing on them paying for that er visit.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
