Recommended Posts

Hi...

This is my first day posting and I already love this place !! Great people !!

Well I do have a few questions...sorry some may come across as being silly, but I gotta ask

1.Is drinking cold liquids going to be a problem? or is that just in the beginning? because I love everything cold..especially Water !!

2. How long does it really take for the stomach to be complete healed?

3. Can you do anything physically normal as you would do before surgery (if you were a thinner person) LoL, ofcourse after you are healed inside and out? can you do any aerobics, dancing, rollercoasters, etc?? without hurting your stomach?? (this one might sound silly) :)

Thanks to All !!

1.Is drinking cold liquids going to be a problem? or is that just in the beginning? because I love everything cold..especially Water !! It hasn't been a problem for me. I drank warm things in the winter, but now the colder the better!

2. How long does it really take for the stomach to be complete healed?

Your doc can best answer this question, but I was on a regular diet 6 wks post-op, so I would consider myself pretty much healed by that point.

3. Can you do anything physically normal as you would do before surgery (if you were a thinner person) LoL, ofcourse after you are healed inside and out? can you do any aerobics, dancing, rollercoasters, etc?? without hurting your stomach?? (this one might sound silly) I love to dance - though nowadays it's mostly in the privacy of my own home :frown1:, and have had no problem shaking my groove thing! I've been on boats, airplanes, walked my butt off during a trip to Italy, and had lots of (married) sex. You should be able to do much MORE than you could before surgery once you've lost some of that excess poundage!

Good luck!

HI and welcome

For me the cold liquid thing was weird to start with, as I found iced drinks too cold... and preferred hot ones, but now I can honestly say I prefer the iced drinks to hot ones- and thats almost 6 weeks out.

I'd say 4-6 weeks on the healed front - although it depends what you are calling healed.... my scabs had gone and scars looking good by 3.5/4 weeks.... I felt 'normal' again. I am cleared for all exercise from the 6 week point.

So far I've not found anything I can't do yet....... ;o)

Good luck

I think your abdominal area sort of heals in stages and you just have to really be patient. I am 5 mos. out and feel completely healed. But only within the last 30 days or so. Finally I feel normal most times.

Cold/hot no problem at all. Not sure I ever had that issue - everyone is different. But someone once said hot relaxes your stomach and I think that is true. When I have trouble eating for whatever reason I drink coffee/tea that is hot.

I think I can do whatever I could do before, and more. Except that my stamina is limited b/c of my limited caloric intake. Better if I'm doing good on Vitamins. That has been my struggle getting those suckers all down in a day.

No lingering sexual issues in my house...but it takes time. Constantly discovering new bones hahaha. My husband loves that. First it was ribs...OMG I have ribs! Then it was collar bone or shoulder bones or thinner legs or now hips...OMG I forgot I have hip bones! hahahaha So it is like your husband gets a new girlfriend every month or so for a while - lucky him.

Be patient. We are all different. But on the same journey. It is a good journey, thank God, for most of us. The thing always always to remember NEWBIES - IS RESEARCH DOCTORS to find the best. Don't go with the cheapest. Check out your doctors HERE guys as well as other places. There are some great docs that make your recovery easy and there are some monsters out there.

Here, we've seen some great success stories but also some few really sad stories too...and our doctors skill level is paramount, but also our ability to take care of ourselves and allow our bodies time to heal!

Yeah!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
