2 wks post op dealing with extreme nausea and diarrhea

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I can't post long because I'm feeling like absolute crap atm. Starting about a week ago, I started having bouts with nausea, dry heaves and diarrhea. About the only thing I can relate it to is trying to drink "too much." Trust me, i have tried every possible way to get my liquids in slowly but consistently (sip, sip sipping), but it doesn't seem to matter.

I had to go in the hospital Wed because I was so dehydrated and my blood pressure was ridiculously low. While I was in the hospital, I didn't have as much nausea, vomiting (which are more like dry heaves as nothing really comes up), or diarrhea, but because I was hooked up to the IV, I wasn't trying to get the liquids down by mouth either. I've been home today and tried a few bites of egg for Breakfast and did fine (these are my first mushies btw). Getting food on my stomach actually seemed to help a bit. I took a nap and then woke up and had a spoonful of refried Beans...again no problem. about an hour later I started to try to sip on some ginger ale, got a few oz down over an hour, then had to take a pill....within a few minutes I was in the bathroom dry heaving and having diarrhea. I laid down again, slept a few hours and since waking up, I just feel horrible.....nauseas, don't want to eat or drink anything. I've been sipping on some Water and i can feel myself getting worse with each sip. How in the world am I going to stay hydrated if I can't get the fluids in???

I just called my doctor and he is going to call in some zofran because I'm currently taking promethazine and that is obviously not helping. I'm sure this will pass eventually (please god I hope it does), but what the heck do I do now? I don't want to go back to the hospital!

Until your tummy settles down you should only do liquids. Let your system rest, otherwise the diarrhea is tough to get rid of. Ginger ale is really a nono. It's carbonated which is bad for your new tummy and the sugar isn't helping the diarrhea.

Clear Liquids, SF popsicles, SF tea, etc. Once you feel like things have stabelized you can try to add something else.

I only say this because I have irritable bowel syndrome and that's what I have to do.

I sure hope you feel better soon. I know you don't want to go back to the hospital, but please don't let yourself get dehydrated.

If you're having trouble getting liquids in, get a timer from the kitchen section at Walmart or Target. At the hospital, I had to drink an ounce of liquid every 15 minutes and the timer helped a lot. So I've made it a habit now! Also Gatorade is a heaven-sent for getting rehydrated.

Definitely get yourself some poweraide or gatoraide. You can get it in sugar free if you want but at this point you aren't getting many calories in anyway.

Gingerale is a definite no no. You don't need the carbonation at this time.

You should be able to take immodium for the diarrhea. They are pretty tiny pills and you should be able to get them down with the gatoraide. Gatoraide and Poweraide have the electrolites in them that you need right now.

The anti nausea meds should help.

Definitely try the gatorade. Maybe even freeze some in popcicles. I found right after surgery it was easier for me to do popcicles than actually drink something. Also warm liquids seemed easier on my tummy. Sip some broth. Water still makes me a little queasy, I have to drink it with crystal light or something.

Thanks guys. I think I may try the gatoraid or poweraid today. Just to clear things up about the ginger ale...it was diet and we shook the hell out of it and then let it sit until it got flat before I drank it so there was no carbonation. I was hoping the ginger would help settle my stomach.

The funny thing is...getting real food on my stomach seems to help. Overfillijng with liquids is what seems to trigger the whole diarrhea and dry heave cycle :(

I'll let you guys know how I do with the power ade.

You don't say when your sleeve surgery was. Has your doctor 1cleared you to eat food right now? I was on liquids for 3 weeks. The first 10 days were clear liquid.< /strong>

sorry, it was june 28th. I asked the doctor about it before they discharged me from the hospital and he said I could try as long as I went easy. Trust me..I'm not eating much at all and so far, haven't had any problems with the food.< /p>

Overall, today went better. I tried some warm tea this morning and then made a gatorade slushi. Still not really getting enough fluids in, but hoping to improve on that.

You might try boullion cubes in hot Water. Warm things might settle your stomach more. Hope you get to feeling better soon.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
