32 BMI prior to surgery - need advice

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I am scheduled to have the VSG at the end of this month and my BMI is 32.2. I am 5'3" tall and I currently weigh 180. I have about 65 pounds to lose, but I'm worried about losing more than that. Losing 65 pounds would put me at 115 pounds. Are there others out there who started this journey with a BMI lower than 35? Will my body just naturally stop losing before it becomes an issue of becoming an unhealthy weight? Or will I have to STRUGGLE to maintain weight and to not lose any more once I hit goal? I'm kinda freaking out and worried to the point that I'm considering cancelling my surgery...All comments and advice appreciated!

My BMI was 35.8 at the beginning of my pre op diet, I'm 5ft 4.5 and was 208lbs. I can't really comment on the goal issues as I was told I could aim around the 140lbs mark....I may end up lower but I won't know until I get there. I know theres people on here who have gone lower than their original 'goal' and have to up their calories to maintain but I suppose everyone is different.

I'm hoping I won't go too skinny, and I think I'll find it bizarre to think I have to actually gain weigth after having the surgery done to lose it all in the first place.

But after 20 yrs of dieting, yoyoing and never really being happy with my body I am finally starting to see the light. I could never do this on my own - I know, I've tried. Even after reading all the stories on here about the fab weight loss during pre op diets I started to question the need for the sleeve in my life... but my life no longer is revolving around food.... I'm no longer hungry. This isn't something i regret doing.

I wish you luck and I'm sure you'll get more response from others who are further down the line.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
