So sorry this happened to you...what a nightmare! I am glad that you will be able to heal the ulcerations and have a safer and more successful surgery now!

For those of us pre-op, do you know what caused the ulcerations (maybe all the stress or the pre-op diet)? Any symptoms you noticed?

My doc did not order that test for me. Does an Upper GI show ulcerations?

Well SH*T, that just sucks. No wonder you were all over the place with your emotions that pre-op diet alone is enough to do it, then to have the rug pulled out from under you is just jank (my 10 year old taught me that). hehe. You have done a good job at talking yourself down though by listing the positives. Take your medications...heal it up and have a great surgery!

Wow, I can relate to $@#$%# that feeling. I just found out my doctor didn't get his privileges. And the hospital only meets monthly to give them. So, I have been anticipating this and on this Protein stuff for a week, ready to go next Friday...all dressed up and nowhere to go. I could cry.

To complicate matters, I am on a short window. I don't have a job so I started my own consulting biz. I don't have any projects right now, so living on a paltry $240 a week (before taxes) of unemployment. Was using life savings to pay for the surgery since I don't have insurance. I really wanted to get this going and get healed to be ready in case I get called to work. Meanwhile, I got a call a couple days ago from a large manufacturing client (possible client) and gave them a proposal. It's a big job which would probably keep me busy til April 2011. @#$%#$@ I want the surgery, and I want the contract. So I called the potential client and told them I would postpone my surgery for the contract and hope my doc gets privileges next month. I really like my doctor, but I am getting so discouraged. I really need the surgery for my physical health and the job for my fiscal health. Aiyaiyai...why does it have to be so complicated? <end of rant>

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
