I felt exactly the same way. I have too little boys and got all worried wondering if I'd really wake up after the surgery. The way I handled it was writing a "just in case" letter the night before in the hotel room. I emailed it to my friend who'd have it to give to my family if needed. It made me feel like I'd put down my thoughts and I could let it go and just focus on having a successful surgery.

Dr. Aceves coordinator will give you a valium to take in the hotel. That helped me a lot. I woke up the morning of the surgery feeling happy and confident. And it went so fast and so easily all my fears were forgotten. The spinal block is great, I never had any pain. Just a bit of discomfort from the dang hard hospital bed. Ask for another pillow and if you don't get a good second chair ask for another one. They swapped out the little one in my room for a big comfy recliner and it was great.

One thing I would suggest is getting an extra prescription to take home of the little pain medication they give you that goes under your tongue. I wasn't in much pain so I didn't think I needed it but ended up having a reall stiff shoulder and neck for the first week. Those little pills worked great without making me sleepy and I wished I'd had a few more of them.

All will be well. Everyone tells you how great Dr. Aceves and his staff is and then you get there and find out that they were right. You'll have a great experience.

Jennifer - I am in Mexicali now, just down the hall from your room. I ask about you when they were doing my preop and said that you were just going into surgery so I will see if I can find you tomorrow and introduce myself. Good luck and many blessings.

I have surgery at 0700 tomorrow morning, it was supposed to be at 1000 but they ask if I was willing to move the time up, and of course I said yes. The sooner the better. The only down side is that we will not be staying in the motel tonight, since Dr. Aceves staff & driver are not in that early on Saturday so we are staying in the hospital. My husband is only staying tonight and then he is going back to San Diego to spend the holiday with his grandkids, so he is being a good sport although I know he is not entirely comfortable with this surgery.

I can't believe I am having surgery tomorrow!!! I am soooo nervous!!!

HI all! Kelly and I have gotten to chat. I found her (or maybe she found me?) yesterday on one of my first walks after my surgery. I was up and about in the hallway waiting for her to come back after her surgery today and last I checked she was doing well. She is a pretty girl and so sweet.

My surgery went fine. Yesterday was pretty easy, today (Day 2) has been a little rougher. My neck and shoulders are quite tight and painful. I am sitting on the nice relciner in my room with a heating pad and it helps.

Brittu: thanks for advise on the pain meds. I am going to do as you say, especially since i already have the pain to which you referred.

Papillon: Youll be on the bench with us before you know it!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
