I WISH I would feel less restriction already!

A small alcoholic drink will relax your stomach too. If thats all it is. I am not recommending this but I have noticed this happens.

Hey Jane I hadn't thought of that...I am not much of a drinker but might give it a shot one of these days maybe when in a restaurant!

Hey Lis. I hope you are able to get some answers about this soon. I totally empathize with you because I too had a hiatal hernia repair and it has added a level of pain/discomfort that I didn't expect post op. It often hurts in my esophagus to drink and after a few bites, I stop so that the food doesn't start hurting like the liquids. I am so scared of it getting stuck in there and hurting. The Water already feels like a hot poker! I've never had the pain last more than a few seconds, so I can't imagine how awful it must be for it to go on for 10 minutes.

Since I'm so soon after surgery, I'm not going to sound the alarm bells right now, but your post is giving me something to think about for a few months down the line if the pain and excessive restriction hasn't resolved. Good luck and keep us updated on what you find out.

Hey Mary, Thank you for your post. I do think that there is more to a hiatal hernia and its repair than any doctors I've consulted with including my surgeon, have realized. So I am really hoping that I am able to formulate some intelligible questions to ask the gastroenterologist, Dr. Singh, prior to the upper endo, coming up soon.

I want you to know that it is not every single day that I have this discomfort. I am quite restricted BUT, I do have days where the foods go down with only a trace of discomfort, (like, "OK I've had enough)....but not the kind of esophageal pain I encounter other times. I really do think that STRESS, the kind that is more like distress, has alot to do with the times that I suffer with eating. It seems that things tighten up when I'm under emotional stress. I'm not too happy about that. I also notice that if I raise my voice as one might when upset, my throat becomes easily irritated. All in all the tissue in my esophagus and throat must be ultra sensitive. So in order to feel alright I've got to avoid stressful situations and if necessary take a 0.5 dose of Klonopin...that reduces anxiety and helps me to relax. We can compare notes as time passes. Hopefully these sensitivities will subside. Please don't worry, I think it's all par for the course, after all we did go to extreme measures by having this surgery.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
