longest weight loss stall ever!!!

Recommended Posts

Okay, you guys are freaking me out big time!!!! I am 8 days away from surgery and I believe in this decision and I am going to do this, but you guys are freaking me out! This is my nightmare regarding this surgery, that I go through all the pain and expense, that I follow the diet faithfully, and then lose nothing at all or just a few pitiful pounds. A stall of 6-8 weeks?!! That's not a stall, that's a full on stop! WTF! How can one not lose weight with this?!! 700 calories a day ... Protein ... exercise ... hydration ... how can one not lose weight?? this makes me feel rather bleak.

Even though I haven't lost any more weight in the last SEVERAL weeks, I still think this surgery is worth EVERY penny. My husband keeps telling me my legs look thinner and my face looks thinner and my pants are so loose.

Also, I sit at a desk job for 11 hours a day. i have NOT been getting in the exercise recommended (I really wanted to wait until my incisions were completely healed because they've been REALLY tender and this is the first week I feel they're fully healed) so that will start this week, too.

So, after I change my diet back to fewer calories, the next step will be Protein.

Get this surgery but go in knowing it's not a quick-fix and it's going to take TIME and WORK on your part.

Trust me, everyone goes through this....we have all hit a plateau, in fact you will hit several along the way. It is not going to fall off over night! Keep your focus on the end result! YOU WILL LOSE THE WEIGHT! You just have to do what you are supposed to, and exercise, eat right. get your Protein and Vitamins in. Do and eat the way your Dr. and his team tell you. In a few months after your surgery, you will look back and wonder where all that weight went! I have lost 30lbs in 7 weeks. No diet I have ever been on did I ever lose it that quick, so just relax, have your sleeve, and just let it happen!!

you guys keep us posted on your stalls. Its scary for all of us to think that a stall could last 7 or 8 weeks. We'll all be waiting to hear when it finally breaks. Hang in there

ps.... reading this thread almost sent me running to my scale in a panick.... I'm going to hang tough though and not way till my 3 month mark!!!!

you guys keep us posted on your stalls.

Mine broke this week!

I'm down 5.5 lbs - finally! I decided to focus on Protein shakes. I would have one Protein shake a day for Breakfast, one for lunch (sometimes) and then a regular dinner.

Also, I got out of the house more this week and got in some exercise.

The only downside to being on my feet more is the swelling. I have cankles! AUGH! So, today I'm staying off my feet as long as possible and watching my salt intake and countering it with more Water.

Anyone else have their stalls break yet?

yea chelsea!!!!! way to go.

THANK YOU! Pretty exciting! I'm down a total of 44 now. That means after my 5 week stall I've lost 14 lbs.

I still find that my biggest issue is too much salt. Instead of sweet things I'm craving salty.

It's amazing how big portions are. I'm so aware of how much I eat that I see a footlong sandwich at Subway (which I used to eat with no problem) and wonder how ANYONE can fit that in their body! Baffling. Yet, our bodies are so amazing and so complicated. I'm glad God knows what they're all about :)

Just hang in there and stick it out. I lost 30 in the first 14 days then didn't lose anything for 5 weeks after that.

I bought (and love) Protein drinks from costco. They're 11oz, 30g Protein, 5 carbs, 1 g sugar. Taste good when super cold and keep me full for a LONG time.

After my stall broke (so, 2 weeks ago) I've lost 14 lbs. Seriously, hang in there! The best thing I did during that stall was only weigh once a week and hope to maintain rather than lose. Change your expectations and you'll be SO much happier.

When you're on mushies you'll need to start watching what you eat. Count calories. Count Protein. Count carbohydrates.

Personally, I hated the mushy food stage. I went back and forth between Protein shakes and soft foods because I didn't like how the soft foods felt in my stomach and I wasn't getting enough Protein. Also, if you don't want Protein Shakes, try a Protein Drink like Isopure. My fave flavor is grape - tastes the most like gatorade. If you've had them, I'm sure you know they have a weird aftertaste, almost like when you have yogurt.

Speaking of yogurt, trade your old stuff for greek yogurt. Get the ones with the highest protein content.

Once you get past this stage it will become a lot easier. I usually have a protein shake for breakfast/lunch and then whatever I want for an afternoon snack and then I'll make a meat-based dinner. Fish will be your best bet.

Also, Water is most important! I don't think I get enough of it. If you can't stand water, get crystal light. Don't get gatorade or anything like that - empty calories.

Stay out of soda (carbonation expands the pouch - big no-no while it's healing) for as long as you can. It's best to give it up altogether.

Keep going. It sucks, for sure, but when your stall finally breaks (or when you start losing) you'll be SO happy and it's such a good boost.

I think a lot of people tend to minimize the trauma our bodies endure due to this surgery. This isn't like having your gallbladder removed, this isn't like a little nip tuck, this is a major organ being removed from our bodies. This going from eating 2000-3000 calories a day with tons of fat, carbs, Protein, to a 1/3 of what our bodies are used to consuming. This is hormones shooting all over the place, this is our body recovering and healing, yet we all expect to drop 50lbs the first 2 weeks, and our bodies to not rebel.

Pretty much our bodies are pissed off, and trying to figure out what the hell we have done to it, and why it hurts, why acid is overproducing, why we're only dumping liquids and Soups into it, why we're trying to be super woman/man during the first 6 weeks. Not to mention all of the stress we put on losing weight, and forgetting that we didn't get fat overnight. We didn't wake up one morning weighing our highest weight, we won't woke up a size 4 a month out from surgery.

I've read plenty of stories of people stalling for weeks on end. When they really look at what they are eating, and their activity level, they either are too calorie deficient, or they are eating too much and aren't truly watching their intake.

I never had a true stall meaning that I lost something every week. Grant it some weeks it was only 1 pound, but I never stalled because I just didn't stress about it. I had a 10 day stall close to goal, but I only had a few pounds to go. I didn't stress over it, I knew it wouldn't do any good to freak over it, and then I woke up one day and those pounds were gone.

I know stalls are scary, but staying on course, and remaining positive are both more beneficial over stressing out, and being irrational about the numbers on the scale.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
