Has anyone gone out of the country alone?

Recommended Posts

So I want to get sleeved in August in Mexico. My family's on another continent, and my boyfriend is, unfortunately, away to Europe for a vacation the entire month, and he can't cancel since he's going with someone else. He was trying to convince me to do this over Xmas or next summer, but I really want to get the surgery this summer. I'm a little worried about going alone (I've never been to Mexico, either, plus I'm Canadian, so I'll be far away from home). Has anyone gone alone? Did you feel like it was a mistake? I'm considering paying for a plane ticket for a friend to come with me - the place I'm going to is not touristy at all, so it'd be a chore for whoever comes with me. My boyfriend said he'd even pay for my friend's ticket himself, but I feel kind of bad. Do you guys think it's too scary/risky to go alone? I've never been under general anesthesia, so this is completely new to me.

I haven't been, but my understanding is that they meet you at the airport and escort you to the resort. I'm sure someone will fill you in, but from all I have heard, I wouldn't be concerned.

Hey,

I'm booking next week, so no date yet, but I'm going with Dr. Aceves. Hoping to have it done in the 2nd week of August. I'll make sure to check out that thread.

I'm leaving this Wednesday to go get sleeved with Dr. Aceves and I'm going all by myself. My aunt was coming with me but couldn't get off work. Strangely, I'm not the least bit nervous about going alone. There was someone else on this forum, I can't remember who, but they went alone also and said they didn't have any problems at all. In fact, it was better that way because the travel buddy would have been totally bored. If you're not going to schedule until early August, I'll let you all know how my solo experience goes. I'm so excited for this solo adventure!

I too am Canadian, (Vancouver) and I went alone. I'm glad I went alone because I would have been worried about my companion being bored. I jsut rested, watched movies and walked the halls.

I had no issues going alone. On the way back I asked for a wheel chair and they assisted with my luggage. All was well.

Hi there! I live in Philadelphia and traveled to and from Mexicali alone. I am actually glad I went alone so I could concentrate on just following my dr's orders. I had people of standby if there was an emergency but I my experience was terrific. If you need any specific info...please drop me a note. I totally suggest bringing something to read or your laptop since you will have some down time and you will most likely have access to the internet. If you are going to Dr. Aceves....you will be very pleased.

Good luck, God Speed and Safe Travels.

I took my cousin's wife (we are friends). Her family is from Mexicali and she grew up there. That made it easier for her because she did not have to hang around the hospital day and night with me. I was glad she was there for moral support and at one point I ran a fever and my IV got accidentally pulled out and they had a hard time getting it back in. The nurses did not really speak English so I did not know what they were saying. She was able to translate. I could certainly have done it all fine by myself. I was glad she was there but I would not delay until the winter just because no one can go with you. Get connected with others going on the same day as you before you go. I assume you are going to Dr. Aceves? They take wonderful care of you

Thanks guys, you've calmed my fears. I feel pretty comfortable with going on my own now. I just hope the flight's not too bad. I'm actually at the airport now, en route to vacation, and our landing for the 1st flight was terrible - I felt so nauseous and kept grabbing onto things because the plane was shaking. I can't imagine how that would've felt if I was 3 days out of surgery! Oh well, if everyone else dealt with the travel just fine, I'm sure I will, too.

I was so glad I went alone. I was supposed to have a friend go but he had to cancel at the last minute. I would have been worried about making conversation and keeping him company. I had 3 whole days that were just about me!!!!!!!!

hi! I am Canadian too (montreal) and will probably be going alone, unless my husband makes it back from Europe in time.

From reading these posts almost obsessively over the past week, I am sure it will be fine alone!!

Good luck, and let us know how it was!:thumbup1:

I am going to Mexico alone as well. I am newly divorced and both of my boys are college age, so there is no way I would have one of them sitting around for 3 days while I am post-op. I had some anxiety about doing that at first, but after talking with my patient coordinator all of those worries just melted away. She is going to meet me at the airport in San Diego and will be with me through my whole stay. Hopefully it will be a good experience.

Blackberry, I have just joined this site because I saw your post last night on my daughter's login. As I type this, she is in the San Diego airport waiting for her return flight after her sleeve, and mine is scheduled for 8-12-10. If you are trying to schedule the 2nd week of August, we might just be sleeve mates. That way, neither one of us would really be travelling alone, because we have already "met". Look forward to hearing from others on the site.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
