What does your pre-op diet look like??

Hi, I don't have my last appointment with my surgeon 'till the first week of July, which is when ( I assume) he will advise me to follow his pre-op diet.

I want to start now though, but I'm not sure exactly what I should be eating, and how much. I know that I should be drinking some Protein shakes, but what else?? Or is that all?? lol

Any help/advice will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Amy

One thing I noticd when I was doing my research is the variety in the pre op requirements from different surgeons.

Mine wanted only 1 week pre op and put me on liquids only based on Optifast Protein shakes.

Some require less time than that some require more - a lot of it is also based around your start weight as well.

Probably a good place to start would be to adopt a low carb diet like Atkins.< /p>

But I expect there will be loads more ideas from others which may help as well....

I had to do a week of liquids pre-op. But, as Sparkle said it varies from doctor to doctor. I agree, cutting back on carbs is a good place to start. One of the main things I read over and over before my surgery, was to cut back on your portion sizes now to help you later. Also taking smaller bites and chewing more thoroughly. This helps prevent you from getting that "stuck" feeling from eating too fast after surgery. Best of luck.

Just got my surgery date and packet...2 weeks of Protein Drinks to replace 2 meals and 1 meal daily of lean meat and green veggies. I've already cut carbs to a min. (try to use the formula of converting grams of carbs into tsp. of sugar). Packet states to chew everything at least 20 times before swallowing. I guess it is to get that habit forming before you *have* to do it.

Another good thing to try and get into the habit of is not drinking with your meal or about half an hour afterwards....its amazing how hard that one is, especially if you eat out a lot.

Hi Amy. My two week pre-op diet is pretty extreme. It is a clear liquid, low sugar diet which consists of unlimited sugar free Jello , popsicles, and broth. Of course Water, crystal lite and Decaf tea. Low carb Protein drinks- make sure you are getting 60 grams of protein/ per day. Also I can have 2 sugar free fudgsicles, 1 cup of skim milk, and 8 ounces of low carb yogurt.

ATTENTION DIABETICS: They recommend consuming 15 grams of carbs every 2 hours. Be sure to monitor your blood sugars and contact your doctor as necessary.

beverages with 15 grams of carbs include: 1 regular popsicle, 1 cup of skim milk, 6 ounces lite yogurt, 1/3 cup of regular Jello also 1/2 cup of orange, apple or grapefruit juice.

When I received my pre-op diet from my doc. I thought let's check it out, let's see how hard it is. It hasn't been to bad so far. Note: I'm doing this on my own, I don't have a surgery date yet. So I will not be doing this for the full two weeks.

I've been doing the pre-op diet since Monday and have lost 15 pounds so far, but I have a lot to loose. People at work are starting to notice , which I love.

Hey Dansha (Deb). Just wanted to see how your appointment went. If I remember correctly, your surgeon is Dr. Hoehn in KC. I have my appointment on Wednesday with him. Way to go on your "practice preop diet". You make me want to try it!!!:lol0:

My 2 week pre-op diet is low carb Protein Shakes for Breakfast and lunch and an Atkins-type dinner of lean meat (4-6oz) and a non-starchy vegetable. It sounds doable, I'm kind of easing into it a couple of days early. The best thing I did was get Isopure zero carb vanilla Protein Powder and a bunch of DaVinci sugar free syrups in different flavors (they have about 50) so I won't get bored with the shakes. The Isopure powder mixes perfectly with Water (and it tastes 10 times better than their ready to drink stuff).

I'm on day 12 of the 14 day pre-op diet for Dr. Hoehn's patients. S.f jello/popsicles, broth, Water, crystal lite. One 8 oz s.f. yogurt a day, and Protein Shakes. The first couple of days were fine; then it got hard. Then, probably the ninth day, it got a little easier. Now, it's okay. I'm keeping very busy; it's amazing how much you can get done when you put your mind to it.

My surgery is scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. As of today, I have lost 22 pounds.

Good luck to everyone! If it's not hard, it's probably not worth doing!

Dalton Weight Management in Dalton, GA put me on the following diet for two weeks prior to surgery.

PRE-SURGICAL liquid DIET

In order to promote your success in the Weight Management Program, your bariatric surgeon recommends the following diet to begin two weeks prior to your surgery date.

GLUCERNA shakes (diabetic section at grocery store)

6 cans per day………………or 2 per meal three times daily.

? Shakes decrease carbohydrates and increase Protein

? If not tolerated can use BOOST, SLIM FAST, OR ENSURE

Drink all the liquids you want, BUT NO SUGAR

May have V-8 or Tomato juice

Bouillon acceptable

Yogurt – any kind without fruit pieces in it.

Tomato Soup – thinned with skim milk or Water

Popsicle’s – sugar free and fat free

Fudgesicle’s – sugar free and fat free

chicken noodle Soup – no noodles or chickenbroth ONLY

Cream of chicken or mushroom soup – thinned with skim milk and pick out pieces of chicken or mushrooms.

NO SOLID FOODS AND NO meatsliquids ONLY!

The Glucerna gave me plenty of gas and diarrhea, but I stuck with it and managed to pass gas unnoticed for the most part. I'll be glad to get off it soon. Good luck!

For me I dont have a date yet but they have me on a pre-op diet anyway the basics of it are low carb high protien and no more then 1200 cals a day. It says you can have one portion of carns a day like brown rice or whoel grain Pasta but I have chosen to stay away from all carbs that are not in fruit or vegies since that are a namjor triger food for me. But since I am not eating carbs I am actually finding it hard to even get in 1000 cal a day I have been ave about 700 - 900 and have losy 3 pounds in 3 days. so it is toatly worth it to start the diet asap plus it will help you get used to the diet after the surgery and if you slip up now its not as big of a deal just get back onto it. I may be getting into this forum a little behind times, but I have questions! My surgery is Thursday morning and I've been doing the protein/Optifast diet since last Monday. It is hard for me because everything is SWEET...I am not much of a sweets person.

I haven't lost much weight, but I suspect it is because I have had to do the cheese and lunchmeat exceptions listed on my diet since I simply cannot stand so many sweet and milky things. If they tasted like fruit juice it would be different I think!

Any suggestions, any ideas about options beyond the sweet, milky Protein drinks?

I was told the diet isn't for losing weight, but shrinking my liver, did anyone else get that information?

Yes, it's to shrink your liver, and to lessen the fatty covering on it, because the doc has to move it out of the way to get to your stomach. For fruity Protein options instead of shakes, get Isopure Plus Ready to Drink on the web. It's worth the money. Comes in fruit punch and grape flavors, not the best but definitely a welcome change from milky shakes. You can also get Isopure Zero Carb Flavorless Protein powder and mix it in with chicken broth-25 grams a scoop. mix it with a small amount of warm Water before adding it to the broth, and then heat but don't boil to keep the protein from clumping.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
