attn ladies...question about birth control

Recommended Posts

this is a question for the ladies who have been sleeved for a while and take birth control.

have you had any problems with birth control pills since being sleeved? i took birth control pills while i had the band with no problems.

however, on another board i read a reply from a member that said she had friend get pregnant while on the pill after the sleeve.

i have one child now and eventually would like another, but do not want to get pregnant until i hit my goal.

even while having the band, i've thought about getting an IUD. has anyone experienced a problem with an IUD after the sleeve?

It's wasn't an issue with absorption of the bc pills, it's the crazy hormonal issues we experience during the rapid weight loss stage. I just wanted to clarify what I posted earlier has nothing to do with absorption or malabsorption of bc pills with the sleeve. They're still absorbed, but I've read about it, and seen it firsthand happen with hormonal bc methods.

I just went a head and got an IUD about a month before my sleeve. I didn't want any "surprises". I have been very happy with the IUD and have no problems.

Just a cautious note - do check with your surgeon about taking them up to and during your surgery..... I had unrelated surgery 3 yrs ago and wasn't allowed to take and contraceptives for I think 6 weeks prior to surgery.

So if you do stick with them, make sure you're ok to continue for that operation time, otherwise seek out an alternative for that time and revert after your Dr gives you the all clear.

I'm currently taking bcp but I am considering seeing my gyn to ask about something not connected to my stomach like the Nuva-Ring or the patch. Something like Mirena would also be on the table except I've never had a baby and they seem to mention already having a kid before in the ads, so I dunno.

My sister has tried IUDs, depo shots and the like and had so many truly horrible experiences that I'm not going to take the chance, since we seem to share some similarities with our female hormone issues.

It is weird for me to go from being utterly infertile due to PCOS to having to worry about getting knocked up. I'm confident that the BCPs are absorbed just fine, but I am concerned that the stakes are just so much higher while I'm actively losing if I somehow forget to take them or don't use backup if I come down with vomiting/diarrhea or take antibiotics.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
