3 Months (and some change) ago...

Recommended Posts

Some days it seems impossible that over 3 months have gone by since surgery. I can barely remember anything about the first two weeks other than when I hit milestones such as picking up my 1 y.o. and getting off pain meds. There were some very intense moments along the way as well as some sweet victories.

My toughest moment was about 1.5 weeks out when I wanted food. I wanted a bite of something. I realized that the relationship I had with food was changed, however grateful I was, I was not prepared. After a large bit of sobbing and sending myself to my room, I just got over it... I do miss the convenience of going to the pantry/refrig/fast food and grabbing something and going. I don't like how much time it takes to deal with food as an overall issue, however it's been a good thing since I am more conscious about what goes into the meal prep and ultimately into my body and my kid's.

The best moments occur nearly daily. The other day I went to a class at the gym which requires walking, running and climbing in alternation and I did the whole class! I felt so accomplished. I tend to lose a lot more weight when I am working out with some consistency. It was nice to go grab some shorts at the store and having to go back for more sizes. I've lost 3 dress sizes and seem to go down in sizes when I am not losing weight. My body tends to do one thing at a time so when I'm losing on the scale, I'm not losing in the inches then the opposite occurs.

I had my 3 month labs drawn and all is looking good. I am very shocked about that since I've really struggled with getting in food and Protein. I have tried many, many, many Protein powders and ready to drink and no luck for me. I am a bit cranky and whiney about the protein flavor and have just given it up in hopes of eating my protein every day. I average between 400-700 calories a day with the occasional day of more. When I have a day with more calories it's usually due to milk or a scoop of ice cream.

I am excited to see where I end up... it's been quite a trip so far!

I love hearing about things like you have posted. It's so cool to lose dress sizes and be able to exercise longer. With 4 children, I'm not sure how you find the time to take care of yourself, so I give you extra kudo's for that!!! Thanks for posting your progress!

You have done SUCH a great job!!! I am really really happy for you. It must be easier to chase those kids around now. I've lost (almost) 50 lbs and I was imagining it as big huge sack of flour that I couldn't even carry, and yet... I did....for years and years and years. For you it was like about 1.4 sacks of flour you have lost now, Is that not amazing?

WOW !!! 4 kids and still making time for yourself to go to the gym. Sounds like you have also discovered that you have to take care of you, so you CAN take care of them well.

Keep up the posts.....you are doing great !!!!:D

Going to the gym is very enticing especially when they offer childcare! Thanks everyone. I've been a little stalled lately and needed a pick me up. You are all just what I needed. It's surreal isn't it? After all our struggles and the climbing scales; it is like a fresh start and just in time for those kids to run circles around me!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
