exactly when can someone stop worrying about having/getting a leak?

Recommended Posts

obviously a big fear regarding this surgery is getting a leak at the staple line. exactly when can someone post-op stop worrying about this? im guessing that a leak can only occur during the first few weeks until the stomach heals, but im not sure. or can a leak happen after this time period if someone doesnt eat properly? any replies would be appreciated. thank you.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'm glad you asked it. I'd like to know if there is a point where I am sure I won't get a leak, too!

Oh, I hope someone answers this one too. I'm only 2 weeks out and and still very concerned and wonder if and when things are safe.

The first 6 weeks is crucial in the staple line healing. The first 2 weeks is the highest risk for a leak. The following weeks is to truly allow the staple line to heal. The tissue will heal completely around and over the staples, but these things take time. That is why lifting restrictions, strict post-op diets, and specific food restrictions are in place to help protect the staple line, and allow for a safe, and effective healing period. People have developed leaks months later some due to surgical error and misdiagnosis when symptoms first appeared, some people admitted to eating the wrong foods, overeating, which can all lead to excess vomiting, and stressing/weakening the staple line.

There can be other factors that increase the risk for a leak such as being a revision patient, smoking, and other personal health issues that may contribute to complications. Discuss the risks with your surgeon based on your own medical history.

According to our expert Dr. Jossart:

"

The answers to these questions are dependent on surgeon experience. These are good questions and you should ask these of your surgeon. In general, leak rates with the sleeve occur from less than 1% up to 5%. Thay may also be more common in reoperations such as band removals. The only thing a patient can do to help avoid leaks is to stay on liquids for 2-3 weeks after surgery. The rest is dependent on technique and tissue quality. "

and,

"The staples are very small and are eventually coated with fibrous scar tissue. They can slowly migrate over years or decades but this does not matter because the staple line is healed within a few weeks. "

I suggest you read his answers in the "ask Dr. Jossart" section of the forum. He has good answers on every area. Almost as good as Tiff ha ha

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
