Hi,

I am two weeks post as of yesterday. I'm having a TERRIBLE time with the Protein shakes/powders/whatevers. I literally get nauseous at the MEMORY of the smell of whey Protein, let alone the taste. I've tried it in lots of things, but even the faintest scent of the whey makes me get that pre-vomiting salivation going, and I don't want to risk damaging my sleeve by vomiting this early. I'm worried about the fact that I'm only getting 200-300 calories per day and probably only 15 grams of protien. I'm only two weeks out and have already lost 30 pounds. I'm sure a lot of that is muscle, given how little protein I'm getting.

What do you think? :thumbup1:

Hi,

I am not sleeved yet, will be in 7 days though!

Anyway, I am concerned about you and want to send a little note.

I have heard of egg white Protein and pea protein you could try one of those to make a protein shake...

You really do need to figure out how to get some protein in you!

Good Luck,

Judy

My sense of smell was super heightened right after surgery and Proteins that I could tolerate before surgery made me physically ill just from smelling them right after. I went through the very same thing and never got enough Protein on my liquid phase! This only lasted a month or two and I tried some other methods to get my protein in. One - I used the special K Protein Drink packets (ice tea and pink lemonade) - it's only 5g, but they didn't gag me and it helped me get my liquids in. You may want to try the Isopure stuff in the bottle - it doesn't have a thick consistency or the "protein" smell. Some people hate it, but I could get it down (it's better really, really cold). Overall, my experience is that the gag reflex did get better after the first month (then you can eat other proteins, which helps). Now, I can use the GNC protein (comes in the red bag/tub). I can't handle a straight Protein Shake because I still don't tolerate anything rich. So, I get the chocolate caramel and mix it with a cup of coffee. It's my healthy version of the fancy coffee drink - haha. It is very common to not be able to get all you need during those first few weeks, but you'll soon be able to nourish your body the way you should.

I boiled chickens with onion and celery and salt. I de-boned the chicken and saved it and just drank the broth. You can cook down the bones even more for a heartier broth. It had tons of Protein.

Seems like I still choked down a couple bullets a day when I had to. I absolutely, after a couple weeks of surgery, could not handle the shakes and this got me through.

I am pre-op and the smell of the Protein now makes me gag.

Here are a couple of my tricks

* Have someone else mix the drinks for you ( if possible) or make them a couple days before and stick them in the fridge (I try to make them the night before) to me the powder is worse than the drink

* I really swear by the blender bottles it only had a smaller hole to drink out of and I don't really get a good smell and if you are making them the night before you can just give them a quick shake and they are ready to go

What brands are you taking in and are they to be mixed with milk? I've heard that the chocolate, vanilla, & strawberry are just too sweet some times. It almost sounds like you are dumping like RNY patients. My surgeon said that some sleevers can dump.

I am 4 weeks out. I don't have a problem with Protein Shakes but... what phase of food are you on? If your still on liquids then the most important thing is for you to get in your fluids so you don't get dehydrated. Once you can have puddings try Proti Max pudding, you might need to google it. They have 6 grams of Protein but they taste pretty good. Once your on mushy foods you can have cottage cheese, bonibel cheese, scrambled eggs, tuna fish salad and other things like that that really are loaded with protein. I can almost meet my daily protein requirements with food but it takes planning and really looking at food. I have also heard that the nectar protein is really good and doesn't have the whey smell or taste since you don't mix it with milk. Plus they have a thousand flavors. Hope this helps. Trust me your swelling will go down some and things will get better.

Just a thought but have you tried the Soya Protein? Maybe you have become lactose intolerant?? Worth a try possibly??

Good luck

I am in the same boat and am forcing myself to choke down a shake a day. It takes everything I have not to throw up and honestly, I feel like doing just that right now just thinking about it. Monday I get moved on to the next stage and I hope to add high Protein things to make up for the loss I am having now.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
