mommytoethan 1 Posted June 19, 2010 i know that straws are a bariatric "no no". however, when i had the band, drinking with straws were ususally the only way i could get all my Fluid in during the day. does anyone drink with straws now that they have the sleeve? does it cause you any problems? i had revision surgery on the 15th, and i'm still not getting all my fluids in during the day. i was thinking of trying with a straw since it made it easier with the band. what are your thoughts? breezy 8 Posted June 19, 2010 I was confused about the straws because right after surgery they brought me fluids and provided straws to drink them with. I'm curious why the straws might be bad? I had trouble the first 8 weeks getting fluids down too. I had to experiment to see what worked best for me. I always kept something to drink at hand. I asked the people around me to remind me to drink. I found hot/warm drinks easier to take, especially flavored tea with some stevia in it. I also liked Soups and figured I'd get more fluids there. But even then I was only getting about 30-40 oz a day. I've noticed since I passed the 8 week mark that I can take a few sips in a row now. I still get the hiccups if I try to drink too much or too fast. But everyone has assured me that it will get better as time goes by, so I just keep trying. Tiffykins 673 Posted June 19, 2010 They aren't a no no for a lot of sleeve patients. They offered me a straw in the hospital, but I chose to sip directly from the cup. I couldn't use a straw early out because it made me feel like I had extra air in my sleeve. A couple months out straws were a godsend, and made drinking much easier. pumpkin07 32 Posted June 19, 2010 They brought me sprite with a straw in the hospital and I was like ???? I didn't drink it. But I don't have a problem with straws.
Phatcurves 3 Posted June 19, 2010 They brought you a sprite???? WTF, I mean is that like a test to see if you blow up before you go home? I use straws during the week when ever they present them selves to me and I have no problems 5 weeks out. My advice is try it and see how it makes you feel. If it doesnt work, DONT use straw :biggrin0: xoxo
deedee 5 Posted June 23, 2010 I use straws depending on how they make me feel. I've noticed that sometimes they seem to let a lot of air in because I get this bloated feeling, but other times it seems to be fine. You'll just have to try it out I guess. mb20mom 9 Posted June 23, 2010 I've used straws since day 1 and never felt any problems with air from them. I get more air from chewing gum, actually.
redroses47 1 Posted June 23, 2010 I was advised to avoid using straws for a couple of months post-op due to possibly either gulping too much Fluid or air at once. It can be pretty uncomfortable. I haven't tried straws yet but will return to them soon. Everyone is different.
