Nexium...the little purple pill

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm 2 weeks post op. My doctor (Aceves) said to take Nexium every day for a month, then we're able to take the less expensive Prilosec for the following 2 months.

What I noticed is that I REALLY need it since the surgery. Every morning when I wake up I immediately have burning from the acid, I suppose. It feels better after I take the Nexium.

Anyway, just wondering if anyone knows...will I have to take these the rest of my life or do things get better with the acid? The doc just mentioned a 3-month period--not after that, so I don't know. I was surprised I even needed it, because I never did before. Thanks.

My understanding is that is varies from person to person. Some ppl get off it with no problems while others don't.

One idea though, since you wake up feeling acid, have you considered taking the Nexium at bedtime to maybe prevent the acid instead of chasing it by taking it in the morning? Don't know if that will help, but may be worth a try.

Reflux is definately worse when lying down - i.e. at night. I am a nurse, and often hear our docs telling people to take their anti-reflux meds at night. Also, try not to lie down for at least an hour or two after eating and that might help some too.

I've been on it a year. I haven't had it for a month now. It takes your body awhile to adjust so it will over produce acid for awhile.

it's getting quite a bit better now. I take gavescon if I get a little heartburn in the evening.

I am 7 months out and still have to take Nexium every morning. If I dont I suffer terribly.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
