back home! my sleeve story so far :)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. The surgery on Friday went fine, and I am soo happy. Met a few really good people who also had the surgery. Let me tell you, two days of 14 hours of driving to get back home SUCKED! It really did take 28 hours to get home.. But trust me I got out and walked A LOT. But I got in about 7pm last night so I am safe!

I'm really not in any pain, the stitches hurt if I cough, or laugh but then again thats normal. Doctor said surgery went very well no complications and everything is perfect! So here is what happened.

My grandmother went with me for support. I went to see Dr.Alvarez to have my VSG. We drove from Northern California to Eagle Pass, Texas. On The morning of Surgery (June 11th), Our amazing driver Rosie came and picked us up along with my friend who had the surgery. around 8am we left the hotel and headed across to Mexico. It was LITERALLY 1 minute across the border. As soon as we got to the hospital each patient met with Dr.Alvarez as well as his other assisstants to go over medical history, and questions we had. We then had some blood work taken and a chest x-ray. They had us go into our rooms that had a couch (pull out bed) for our guest who came with us, tv, our own bathroom with a shower. Everything was really nice, EVEN THE PEOPLE!! I mean you just don't usually get really good service in the U.S I have found out. They were all so caring and helpful and were always in and out of your room asking you if you needed anything at all. The first night was rough for me, and the doctor drove back to the hospital from his home just to reassure me and help me any way he could to feel more comfortable. Not many doctors would do that, usually they would just have the nurses deal with it. The day after we did the leak test, and I cleared that. Everything went amazing! Dr.Alvarez is very good at what he does, and he is a very kind person who loves what he does and loves to help others. He really is one of my heros, cause he did save me. I love how he continues even after surgery to be there for you. I know some of his patients that had surgery almost 2 years ago and they say they Facebook him and talk to him all the time! Dr.Alvarez and his staff are the best! Even though I am glad to be home, I miss them already lol.

I weighed myself today..and the total number from 1 month ago (went on a 21-day liquid diet) I lost..*drumroll* FOURTY POUNDS!!! yay!

I am so excited to see how my life turns out and how different it will be with the sleeve. My journey has just started, and I have NO regrets!

Wish you all the best on your journey, and If you are thinking about getting the sleeve..dont think about it..just do it!!! :001_cool:

I'm so glad to hear that you're home safe and sound! Congratulations on being 40 pounds closer to your goal!

It sounds like you had a pretty easy time of it.

You did say you had problems the first night. May I ask what happened that the doctor had to come to the hospital?

Still pre-op and still curious....

So glad to hear you are safe and well. You have been in the back of mind since this weekend. The "mommy" in me was worried about you making that drive.

Of course. I was coughing up flem with some blood, and feeling really really sick. he said the blood is normal when having a surgery like this, and after he put me on some anti-nausea medication (spelling?) I felt soo much better and haven't had any blood come out since. :biggrin0:

Thank all of you for your love, support, and wishes :) I must say..it feels sooo damn good to be on this side of things now:thumbup:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
