A bump in the road to my VSG :(

Recommended Posts

Just got a call from my doctor telling me that my upper GI barium swallow yesterday, revealed a duodenal polyp. I have to get an endoscopy to evaluate it before they will go through with my VSG. I'm not particularly worried about it (although I'll feel better when they TELL me that it's ok), but I am concerned that I'll have to have my VSG date pushed back. I've been on this frigging liquid diet for 6 frigging days and I have 2 more weeks to go and don't want to start all over again. I just want to get it over with. I'm conflicted enough about getting this surgery (still feel like I ought to be able to do it on my own- yeah, I know). It's just discouraging. Thanks for listening! :biggrin0:

Guest Stephanie

Sorry to hear about that. My endocrinologist told me today after some bloodwork results she wants to work with me and wait about 3 months and we can talk about surgery again. My thyroid is suddenly extremely low. She wants to resolve that before she lets me have the surgery. So I understand how you feel. Take care.

You too, Stephanie. My husband points out that at least with all of this testing, we are getting our pre-existing health issues detected and addressed. Keep me posted!

Sorry to hear your news - when are you having the evaluation done - fairly soon I hope.

Fingers crossed for you and your date not changing,

Keep us informed

Kathy

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
