Low calorie protein powder

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Can anyone/everyone please give me some suggestions on a low calorie Protein powder/shake to use after surgery? I'll be on clear fluids for week 1, and full fluids weeks 2 and 3, I'm not sure what types of Protein powder to be using that's low fat, low calorie.

Has anyone ever tried Isopure or IsoPro (not sure about the names)?

Thanks.

I tried the Isopure drinks. I tried grape, apple, and the orange flavors.Of all of them I like the apple best.It was really good mixed with lite apple juice, just make sure it's really cold otherwise it can be kinda yuky to me. There is a site bariatriceating.com they have alot of Protein stuff. The Nectars mixed with crystal lite are yummy

I dont think you can get Isopure in canada, or at least so the stores I've been to say. There is a powerbar choc shake I got at zehrs that has 32 grams, but the only problem is that it has 380 calories. I figure that I'm not getting very many calories elsewhere right now, and I want to make sure I get Protein, so for now I drink about 1/2 a bottle a day. Let me no if you find anything better.

I think most bandsters are aware of Isopure. If you decide to try it, be sure to get the carb free version. There are several flavors and a few of them are not carb free to be sure to check the labels.

Isopure gets to be pretty gross tasting, but the best of the lot, in my opinion is the blue one - don't remember what flavor they're calling it.

Hi Buffie...I was banded by Dr. Joffe as well and had the same post-op diet.

I used the GNC brand Protein powder (from GNC!)...the "double royale chocolate" IS REALLY yummy. In fact I just bought my second "jug" yesterday. It is low carb and high Protein. For week one, I mixed it in Water (it reallly wasn't that bad). For weeks two and three I mixed it i milk or chocolate milk or even ensure (I needed the cals) and mixed with those (the milk etc) it is WONDERFUL!!!! In fact, I still have it for Breakfast every morning. Sometimes I add a bananna. I also tried the bananna berry flavour powder; also good but I preferred the choc!.

Good luck!

hi yoda where did you get the Protein powder?is it very expense?thanks loriely

Got the powder at the GNC store (many malls have them). It is pricey but it lasts a long time. I"m just happy I found one that I liked on the first crack. It is about $40 for 1 Kg or $91 for 2.72 kg.

The other night at surgical support, a lot of the lapbanders and gastric bypass patients were having a problem getting their Protein in and what the center has referred them to is Beneprotein. You can get it at Walgreen's. You can add it to anything ... drink or food ... and it doesn't add any taste. Although it only has 6 grams of Protein ... if you add it to a 16-oz Water ... crystal light ... whatever you drink, that's 24 grams of protein (if I'm figuring it correctly) at 100 calories.

  • Resource® Instant Protein Powder: A concentrated source of high-quality protein you can add to foods or beverages to increase their protein content.
  • Mixes easily and instantly into most foods and beverages without seperating for better tasting, more enjoyable meals.
  • Each scoop provides 6 grams of high quality protein and 25 calories.
  • Simple to use: 1 scoop=1 serving, all in a handy resealable canister.
  • Resource® Instant Protein Powder is a medical food - please consult your health care professional on the use of this product.
  • Health professionals commonly recommend Resource® Instant Protein powder to people with conditions: Lactose-controlled diet; Diabetes;Low cholesterol needs;Low sodium needs;High protein needs;Low potassium needs;Volume sensitivity;Renal (kidney) conditions.

Once again...this may not apply to Canada. We don't have Walgreens in Canada.

I'll look to see if Benefibre is in Canada though; although 6 g is NOT a lot!! I'd rather use Protein powder (low carb, low cal etc). It's worth the tradeoff to get a BIG dose of Protein (ie. 40 g as opposed to 6).

Yeah, we have Benefiber here... it's pretty great.

I looked up Beneprotien, and we *should* have it in Canada... but I've never seen it. I'll keep my eyes peeled though. If I, say, added it to several drinks a day, it would be good, but only if it's not VERY expensive. You're supposed to spread your Protein throughout the day, so I suppose in that way, it would be good.

I like the idea of a tasteless Protein Drink. The scariness of trying a $50 tub of Protein powder steers me away from it! I swear, if I get a whiff of another powder that smells like Slimfast, heads WILL roll!

I shall let the Canadians know if I find it! and where!

And no, I've never tried Isopure, or seen it anywhere, but I'd be willing to. (it's the clear Protein, right?) Have you seen it somewhere Buffie?

Dyna whey is pretty good. It's available from Superstore, 30 scoops/portions for $24-26. Each portion has 30g of Protein and 1g carbs. No neurotoxins (aspartame). What really makes it attractive to me is that it's cold processed which means that if you take a couple of selenium tabs with it, you get increased glutathione production (the grandaddy of antioxidants) equivalent to the really high priced multi level marketing glutathione products. My fave is the strawberry-kiviburst and I think it's the most popular flavour because they're often out of it.

Hi Mandi,

I don't think the Isopure is available in Canada, I can't stand the Slimfast tasting stuff either, brings back too many bad memories of the past. I think I'll try the stuff Yoda mentioned, at least you can mix it with Water.

How are you doing? Is your band working well for you?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
