~ Lazy Co-Worker ~

Recommended Posts

The boss is out today, can you tell???

Ok I work in a dept with 3 other Girls. One gets here at 6am and works till

2:30pm 1/2 hour for lunch.

One just got back from Maturnity leave ~ so I cannot complain there.

The other is the one that truly pisses me off. She comes in around 8:00

or around there give or take and leaves at 4:00pm no lunch but she does sit and eat hers. Oh but she puts a 1/2 hour on her time card. I cannot see where she works 8 hrs as required in this dept. The majority of her time is spent on personal calls ~ emailing her friends ~ or 1/2 hr in the bathroom.

I do not time her but she is regular and spends quite a bit of time in there and when you talk to her she comments on others and their bathroom habits.

How long and such ~ gross. She always comes in with bed head and you can tell her personal hygeine is not a priority. She is OB and her apron hangs quite a bit. I have actually talked to her about taking care of herself but -cannot lead a horse to Water and make them drink. She just grosses me out.

Sorry just have to say that. She also has nail fungus on her feet and hands - I hate for her to touch anything and give it to me cause it is just gross.

When she is not doing any of the above she is off wondering or on a smoking break. I try not to let it irritate me but it does. I come from the old school and get my work done and am always on time and clean.

I do not dislike her but wish that she would get her act together and just be like the rest of us..

Doesn't sound like much of a co-worker... Man, what a tough situation. I'd make a call to human resources, and see if they can offer any tips. Of course, I think we have some HR folks here that might be a ble to offer some real help.

Sorry! ((((hugs)))))

I have thought about it Vines - but I know HR will come back to our boss and then all hell would break loose if you know what I mean. I am very very close to going and giving them the heads up on the time card issue. That pisses me off that I am forced to take a lunch while she chows down and does not report it. But the 3 yrs I have been in this dept I have seen her do alot of crap.

what do you mean all hell would break loose? is it that she would give you crap for announcing? could you type up an annonymous note and send it to hr so that no one knows? or could you ask that they investigate on their own and leave you out of it? I used to work in an HR dept for a short time, and while I hated it, I do admit that one of the things HR is always big on is investigating claims without upsetting the work balance. If you complain about the cleanliness and work place appearance, as well as the time card violations, they will prolly investigate without point you out.

When I say all Hell would break loose is they would know it was someone from our group that blew the whistle. We are not a really big Co and everyone knows everyone. I guess what I could do is the note thing from someone out side the Co. ~ giving them the heads up?

even if it is a small group, investigating a time card issue is not unusual, so it might not come from inside the group.

cheating on your timecard is considered stealing by company standards. HR will take you very seriously, and prolly just watch her for a while on their own. in watching her they may see the appearance issues you have as well. i think that an anonymous note to them, talking about the time card and how uncomfortable a work place she makes it with the way she talks and takes care of herself, will make hr really focus on her and the problem will resolve itself. you have been there for 3 years...i would do what you could to make it a nice place to work.

I have been in this dept for 3 years and coming from a dept where your every move was watched by you supervisor was an eye opener. We have a lot of lee way in this dept and alot of perks - come in early work you 8 and leave - all I can say is Thanks to the fake nails she got that we do not have to hear her clipping them every day... ;)

This needs to be reported to HR. The report should be in writing with very specific accurate facts like dates, time, and brief but accurate description of each incidence. If possible provide supporting evidence such as another employee's account of the situation. If your department has personnel and company policies that this employee is directly violating then that needs to be noted.

Once you have submitted your report be sure to continue to document everything.....you may have to rely on this information at a future date.

The HR department should treat and handle this with upmost diplomacy without implicating anyone.

Good Luck

Carol

Most companies of any size consider time card falsification grounds for immediate termination, so maybe "all hell will break loose" means you'll have an extra workload for a while. ;)

As for the hygiene don't be shy, but don't be offensive. Her apron hanging is not really something she can help, so don't point out the things you just don't like, vs. the things that truly cause you some physical discomfort (like smells). If you're not comfortable saying something to her, ask your supervisor to do it. Part of her/his responsibility is to mediate between employees, so it would not be a stretch for them to address the issue.

If you can come and leave when your 8 hours is taken, why are you forced to take a lunch? Isn't it your choice? If you believe there are double-standard in effect, then again - address the issue with your supervisor. Just be smart and diplomatic about the way you bring it up - be objective, factual, and leave your emotions at home that day.

Mita ~

I totally get how you are feeling. I too have a co-worker from hell. There are 3 of us in my department, one of which is our boss. My boss is great, love her. The other one is the problem. She comes in around 8:30-8:45 while my boss and I are always there at 8:00 which is when the courthouse opens. The reason she comes in late is because she is supposed to only take 1/2 hour lunch when in fact she always takes an hour. So every week I am at work 2-1/2 hours more than she. Then she is constantly on the phone taking care of her personal business and talking with her kids and husband, she is gone from work so much she is almost out of time to take so other people gift her their time. Then to top it off, she always pushes any problems or issues to me and my boss because she doesn't know what the hell she is doing and doesn't want to figure anything out on her own, or take responsibility for anything. She sits at her desk and eats like full on sub sandwiches, chips, messy stuff and she is the one who is the first person people get when they come in our office, it's disgusting......Oh, I could go on and on, it feels good to get it out!!!

Thanks for letting me vent, it is so hard sitting there day after day and putting up with her.

I feel for you!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
