??? "starvation mode"

Recommended Posts

I have just started to lose weight, six months after surgery :), but I think I am going back into starvation mode. This happened when I was on the liquid only phase. I was just filled a week ago, and lost 9 lbs the first week, then went down 11 lbs, but am now going up a little. I am not eating more, I am having a hard time eating at all. I have talked to my surgen who does not want to unfill just yet. She wants me to revisit my diet guidelines and see nutrition.

Anyway, my question is does anyone know what to do to stop starvation mode? I do not want to gain back all my weight again ;), which is what happened during the liquid phase.

this always worked for me...

egg beater in the morning

half an orange for snack mid morning

baked, broiled, boiled chicken for lunch with some good Fiber foods...like raw veggies

half an orange for a afternoon snack

baked, broiled, boiled chicken for dinner with some good Fiber foods...like raw veggies

do this for three days. i have not tried it with my band yet, i was saving it for my first plateau. i did this when i was dieting with a nutritionists help. i have done this twice, the first was to jump start my diet as i started the diet...i lost 7 lbs(and it stayed gone until i stopped dieting a few months later)...and when i hit my first plateau after about a month, i did it again for two days and lost 3.5 lbs, and successfully got my diet working again. this weight stayed off as long as i was on the regular part of the diet. i did not gain it back until i started cheating on the program and spiraling out of control...you know how it goes. oh, yeah, make sure you drink ALL of your Water, and go for a brisk evening or morning walk.

Good Luck and Hang in there!

Wow, the same thing happened to me. I would only lose weight when I couldn't eat. It took me 3 months to realize my band was too tight. I kept reading about other bandsters being able to eat and still lose weight and I was just so frustrated all the time because first bite would give me enough pain that I would not want to try another bite of the offending healthy food. So then I would wait 2 or 3 hours (mind you, still hungry) and to be sure I could end my hunger I would eat ice cream. I finally had an x-ray and lo and behold I was too tight. Now I am not so crabby anymore. It's weird though because after a fill, they have you drink Water. Odd isn't it, they are only concerned that you drink water so food does not really have to go down for the adjustment to be successful. You will get a lot of good advice from the other posters here, reading their posts has helped me a lot.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
